what NOS 5U4GB rectifier tube for good sag?

i'm looking to try some NOS rectifier tubes in my Mark V. the stock Mesa 5U4GB has nice sag, but i would like more if i can get it. i don't want anything stiff-sounding. i've read people digging the NOS Tung-Sol 5U4GB, but i can't find anyone comparing some of the different NOS brands of...

    RTF = WTF?

i had a similar situation recently. i got some RFTs from a highly reputable vendor--they sounded awesome. i had different noise problems with some of them, in multiple amps. the vendor seemed to think it was something wrong with me or my setup. i was super-careful and i'm a very good...

    Mark V with a 7 string?

i run 7s, a custom Ibanez and one i built myself, through a Mark V into a Recto vertical 2x12 with V30s. i think it sounds great. i get plenty of clarity on the low B. for really high-gain sounds, palm-muted low B and C# and D aren't as tight as notes on the higher strings. the Extreme mode...

Still struggling with harsh frequencies I can't dial out...

a couple things i've done that have tamed the harsher high end: try Russian 5881 power tubes. they're very similar to 6L6, so they still have the 6L6 low end, but they have less highs. Boogie sells a rebranded Russian 5881. use the graphic EQ instead of the presets, and keep the treble...

FS: Tung-Sol RI preamp tubes, 4 of 'em, low hours

FS: four Tung-Sol Reissue preamp tubes. High-gain, super-low noise tube that a lot of people really dig. Doug of Doug's Tubes recommends these for V1 in Mark series amps. Less than 10 hours on them--I bought them to brighten up a Class A high-gainer I had but then sold. Tube places are...

Re: anybody tried KT77 power tubes?

cool. my EL34 tests have been ok so far--the mids are awesome, but the low end is a bit loose. i'm going to try to test some KT77s. PM me about the wiring diagram--i've got those all saved somewhere and can dig it up for you.

    KT77 is a variant of EL34s....

Re: anybody tried KT77 power tubes?

has anyone tried KT77 power tubes in a Mark V? they sound like a cross between a 6L6 and an EL34, and they bias like an EL34. i love them in my Bogner. i've experimented with two 6L6 and two EL34, but i'd rather run all four of the same type of tube. anyone?

What to do if I'm a Mesa and Marshall guy?

totally agree that Channel 2, Crunch Mode is where to go. even running 6L6s, i can get pretty close to that sort of midrange-y Marshall tone using the Presence control to add in bite and using the Preset EQ instead of the graphic (with my setup, the Preset EQ sounds brighter and snarl-ier than...

    Another favorite power tube thread

i like the russian 5881s. i used to run Sovtek 5881s in my old Boogie 50/50, and i tried that set for a while in my V, then bought a new set from Mesa. to my ear, they have the same good bass as the stock 6L6s and a nice midrange but a lot less peaky and harsh on the high end. i do like...

Will Tung Sol 5881s work in my Mark V?

are they NOS or recent Tung-Sol reissues, made in Russia? if they are NOS: no! they will not work. they will burn up. the original 5881 and the 6L6 are different tubes that have different voltage requirements. NOS 5881s are not safe to use in a 6L6 amp. the confusion comes because the...

Retubing! Need assistance on tube placement.

ditto for me. his recommendations for the Mark IV have the JJ in the position that is equivalent to v3 on the Mark V. the JJ sounded better to me there, in v3. the Penta also sounded better to me in v2, a bit smoother. the Tung-Sol RI in v1 made the amp really shrill. i get a rounder and...

    Mark V V1 preamp tube

yes, that same thing exactly. the T-S reissue in v1 to my ears has really nice gain and gives a great "pushed" fat clean sound, but it makes the gain channels too shrill for me. it does that same thing for me in v1 on Bogners too. my fav in v1 is the Mullard RI. it has a great, thick gainy...

    Jan 5751 in V1 question

i tried a JAN 5751 in v1 of my Mark V. it did have a small bit less gain, and i play really high-gain sounds so i noticed it. but the bigger drawback for me was that it sounded grainy, less smooth, on high-gain sounds. i found that the Mullard Reissue is the perfect tube for me in v1. it has...

    FS: Celestion CL80 and G12H30

For Sale: Celestion Classic Lead 80 and G12H30 12" Speakers. Both are 16 ohms. They sound great in a 2x12 together--the G12H has nice mids and a deep low end, and the CL80 has tight bass and good definition in the mids and highs. In excellent condition--only about 50 hours playing time on...

Just ordered a couple more AX7s...

i absolutely love the Mullard RI in v1. it smoothed out a bit of harshness (i was using a T-S in v1, and those sound a bit bright to me), and it added an awesome thickness to the high gain channels, all without reducing the gain. (i play high-gain sounds, so i need all that gain). i liked the...

FS/FT: JAN GE 5751 NOS Preamp Tube, like new SOLD

SOLD -- thanks. For Sale: JAN GE 5751 NOS Preamp Tube. 12AX7 substitute with slightly lower gain, which some people love for the V1 position in high-gain amp like a Mark series. From NOS military stock made in the 80s; I bought it selected and tested from one of those online tube stores. In...

    Mark V Tube Thread

i think i tried that (i know i tried an AT7 in V1 and the PI slot, and it was too low gain for me in both places). but i like getting a bit of crunchy edge in the Crunch mode, so i probably wouldn't dig an AT7 in V2. i can get the Mk I mode smooth by running it w/ no EQ.
