You can get some great metal sounds out of a Mark V. A lot of people dig Extreme mode for modern tones and I still dig Mark IV mode for modern tones. IIC+ mode is awesome too for metal sounds also; it's just less compressed than the other two. Running in Pentode will definitely thicken things up a bit also on the lead channel. Just play with the sliders. For a metal sound, I keep the 750 slider just above the bottom line and for some further scooping/smoothing drop the 2200 anywhere from the middle line to half way between mid and bottom. Cuts your upper mids a bit.

Now here's the thing. A Mark can get pretty freakin' nasty, but it will never have the grind that a Recto does. A Recto, any Recto is gonna be a monster for modern tones. Rectos also respond very, very well to boost/OD pedals. They love them. A cranked Recto on modern mode with a SD-1 or TS-9 in front of it will be face melting. The Roadster is also voiced a little differently than most Rectos too. It's a little darker, so it's not as "piercing" in modern mode. As far as leads go, hit it with a boost or run Vintage Mode for your lead tone (or do both). It's not gonna be "plays itself" fluid like the Mark, but it doesn't sound bad by any means. Hell Petrucci got great lead tones out of a Road King on Train of Thought. And until I got my Mark IV, my Tremoverb had my favorite lead tone ever (on both Vintage and Modern. Had two different but equally awesome sounds I could get out of it). My advice: play both extensively if you can before making a decision.

Ola Englund gets some sick metal tones from the Mark V, here they are:

I just want to know if the mark v can get a modern metal tone like trivium, killswitch engage, BTBAM, A7X. All the other tones i have gotten out of the amp are amazing but I really would like to get a good heavy chugging modern metal type sound. Can the Mark V do it or should I just get a roadster? sound clips would be nice...oh and the only thing that discourages me from getting the roadster is that I heard it can't get great solo tones like the Mark V and I also hear it is too loose sounding. Is this true?

Please post the settings for this if you can.

I realise this is a pretty old thread. But it still seems to be a pretty common question.
Tonight I was asked if the Mark V can do modern 'Chuggy' tones, and decided to do a demo.

It's just a simple riff, but demo-ed on the Mk IV mode and Extreme mode. Both with and without a Fulltone OCD boosting it.
Starts with the riff mixed with drums and double tracked, switches to single guitar with no drums part way through each riff.
Hopefully this might help others who find this topic when searching.
