Quad mods—what’s been on Mike B.’s menu?

Bought a quad from a gentleman in Europe. The tubes were old so I replaced them with relatively "new" ones. JJ 12AX7 in first position and rest were TAD. Sounds way better than with old tubes. Anywho, curious about the mods. There are different stories out there about the Ch1 Lead already...

Which power amp for Studio Pre?

Is that kinda like the simul class you have in Mesa poweramps or is it something else?

Mesa Quad and a solid state power amp

@DMT As far as Tubes go, I got an email from Eddie at Eurotubes and here's what he said regarding retubing of the Quad. This info might be quite useful for most people around here who own a quad. By the way, about an EQ in the poweramp section. I am not familiar with many poweramps that Do...

Mesa Quad and a solid state power amp

I have been looking at a Peavey Valveking 112. It says that this amp can switch between Class A and Class A/B. I know this isn't exactly simulclass, though it sorta reminds me of it, but would this amp's power section work well with the Quad?

    2 ninety and cabinet issue

The only way you could possibly damage the amp is if you do not connect it to the speakers properly. Make sure you plug into the right impendence on the amp, and then just slowly start to roll up on the volume. You don't have to blow the walls off by playing on 10 right from the start.

    20/20 Questions

In that case, why not just use the triaxis through the Mark IV's poweramp (FX Return)? I think you'll achieve a better sound for leads, plus you have a simulclass option as well.

That's just INSANE! I envy you. How much did all of this cost ya by the way?

    First Rack

I think it is always better to try and get the best possible tone out of an amp before shaping it with an EQ. EQ is the most helpful effect unit ever invented, but it won't really compensate too much if the tone is already bad.

Mesa Quad and a solid state power amp

Hehe that's a really wicked way to put it. :D  Definitely getting that bad boy then. So I'm guessing it should work good with me quad eh? Oh and another thing. Does the peavey have the tone sweetening effect or is it transparent. In other words how is the colorization of the tone?

Mesa Quad and a solid state power amp

Yeah I have been considering this as well .Read some really nice reviews about the Peavey 50/50. Some say it is even better than 60/60. Much rounder and warmer tone, though some claim that 60/60 has more bottom end, probably cause of the 6L6 tubes, but on the other hand it's a little unpractical...

    Mesa Dynawatt 20/20 VS Marshall EL84 20/20

Not in Norway. The said Marshall (used) costs around 3000kr, while the Simulclass 295, also used is 7000. Big difference.

    Mesa Dynawatt 20/20 VS Marshall EL84 20/20

I've kinda given up on getting a simul class power amp as it's ridiculously expensive for me right now, so I'm considering something a bit smaller. I do have a chance of acquiring a said Marshall but I'm unsure which one would be better paired with my Quad. Thoughts?

    Pic: Hetfield's current rig

In all honesty, I think James' current tone sucks. Metallica should have sticked to their 80s early 90s tone. This is the ultimate Hetfield rig. And for the record, The best Metallica tone ever was and always will be the Justice tone. It was tight as hell, and sonically it was the apex of...

    20/20 or 2:90 with Triaxis?

Any other amps preferably with 6L6 tubes that could be used instead?

    Distortion Pedals..

Why would you use a distortion pedal with it. I think triaxis has enough versatility to cover any ground in music. You can go from clean to blues to crunchy rock to heavy metal at a press of a button (or a turn of a pot) In other words, Mesa Boogie amps generally have enough gain to completely...
