Hello
I bought an 80's New Zealand new , serial 127xx , SRGX iic+ combo a month or so ago and have been having some fun exploring it's sounds . I hadn't really heard one before but had read a lot about them on this forum and other darker places on the net and was really curious . One then came up for sale on a local auction site here in New Zealand and I snapped it up in a hurry . Scary really as it cost me $3000 for something I'd never heard . I bought it in a hurry as I was sure someone else would snap it up , and apparently there were others very keen to purchase the seller later told me , someone called him up to purchase just moments after I won the auction . Yay me . Good to know there's buyers out there if I don't get along with it .
So far so good though , I'm really enjoying the sounds , I do manage to continue getting a bit of flubby base when I play really fast ( think disposable heros , Metallica gallop ) which I haven't been able to completely dial out yet . Any suggestions for this ? Actually I'm sure this must have been covered somewhere , I'll have a look around . Incase someone has some suggestions though my settings for this type of playing is .
Lead channel
Vol 9
Treb pulled 7
Bass 1.75
Mid 4
Master depends but around 2 pulled
Lead drive 7
Lead vol min or sometimes balanced with the master
Presence around 4
Reverb 0
Eq is a shallow V with mids completely cut ( for home playing ) and the rest close to centre .
I'm running it mainly through a mesa 2x12 vert recto cab as well as the very violent black shadow combo speaker . I'm not sure of the tubes , I believe the power tubes are originals ! So I bought some
Jj's to try out to see if a fresher tube set made much difference and so far not really to my ear , although I do slightly prefer the originals . Hard for my trademans ears to tell and to be fair I haven't had it supper loud to really push the power tubes . I also bought a tungsol to try and a jj ecc83s and ecc83mg to try out in different positions but so far I think the tubes it came with sound better . Unfortunately the older tubes don't have readable print left on them ... I will be doing some research for some recommended tubes in the future .
My main question is can I slave this out to my triple rectifier ? Possibly into the parallel effects loop ?
My goal would be to get a blend of amp tones , I'm just curious really and looking to further experiment . I'm keen to get some dual amp sounds but don't really have much equipment/or experience at the moment to achieve this , hence hopefully this simple solution . The reason I'm looking at this is I know some bands blend different amp sounds but normally I'm guessing with far more complex rigs .
Two final questions , how does one identify what power transformer is on the amp ? I've read the 105's are the best ?
Also is there any way I can get this amp to respond as fast as my line 6 modelling tube amp . By this I mean my modelling amp has a fantastic response to my playing like its anticipating my pick and has the sound ready to explode almost before I play it . The mesa on the other hand has the slightest of delays in response and makes me feel a bit clumsy/slow in comparison when playing fast stuff like master of puppets for eg . Perhaps this is common ? I'm using an emg 81 at the moment . Is this just how it is with tube amps ? I find the same thing with the triple too .
Thanks for any help . Sorry if my post isn't very clear , I'm not much of a writer .
Jason .
Ps also loving the cleans and reverb . For some reference I've been playing around 13 years mainly pearl jam rock type stuff . But lately I'm on a quest to get some of the Metallica back catalog dialled , I'm really loving the gymnastic challenge of playing the heavy fast rhythms .
Figured out the photo thing
