It takes a special preamp tube which is higher gain and lower noise than a 12ax7. My brother swears by the proper preamp tubes and refuses to use 12ax7s. We had it biased and threw a pair of Mesa's matched and tested 6L6s and it sounds great.
Ok, I'll try and explain the sound. It is a very gritty and noisy amp. It isn't smooth and compressed like a dual rec. It is more like a cross between an orange and a Soldano. The amp tends to love any guitar pickup with an alnico II magnet in it. It absolutely hates alnico V magnets though. We haven't tried it with active pickups but it does do well with ceramic magnets. For a cab, it sounds the best with the Mesa Standard or Traditional rectocab. My brother plays a G&L ASAT with his rig and it sounds great. My Les Paul sounds like bunk through the amp (alnico V magnet in the pickup) but my Godin LG sounds absolutely incredible. (Seymour Duncan Alnico II Pro neck and Custom Custom bridge) For a sound clip, look up the 90s ska band Five Iron Frenzy. One of the guitarists plays through a Red Bear. The amp really has a very unique tone.

I have only played it for about 2 hours at a good volume, but can hear the potential.
The guys at mesa were right. These Mark series amps are tweakers amps. I think it's going to take a while
to coax my tones from it but I know it is a killer rig.

Here are a few pictures of my amps and racks I use for various things.
This is my current metal rack. It replaces the Triaxis and 2:90 I had in the rack previously. I use a DS-1 and NS-2 in front of the amp, and the G-Major in the loop and handling the switching. The rectifier was purchased from the Plano Texas Guitar Center for 400 dollars and shipped to my home. It had blown a bunch of resistors on the heater supply and a couple of other parts on the inside. I repaired it and it sounds awesome. It is a Revision F rectifier with the MKIII transformers.
This is my MK III. I got it for 300 dollars from a local pawn shop because of the broken pot and someone had stolen all the tubes. It was being sold 'as is'. I spent ten minutes replacing the pot and put in some extra tubes I had. I run a NS-2 into the amp and a GE-10 in the loop. The amp includes reverb.
These are my three other amps. A revision G triple rectifier, A trem-o-verb, and a 5150. The Tremoverb had an issue with one LDR but once that was replaced it works wonderfully.
This is my previous Triaxis rack and my Industrial metal rack. The triaxis rack is waiting for me to buy a new Rack to place it in. The industrial rack from top to bottom has a GR-50 midi guitar interface for controlling the synths, an Akai Sampler, a Novation A-station analog synth, a MP-1 that gets the direct guitar signal, a mixer/effect, and a halfler power amp. There is a speaker sim attached to the MP-1 to prevent the hive of bee's sound due to using full range speakers for the synths.
This is the racktifier with it's guts spewing out during repairs.
And this is my amp room/computer room in it's natural state. Included in this pohto are my Vetta, A slo-100 clone I built, my PodXT and PodX3 amongst other things.
