I am wondering if I can get the gain tones to be a little more transparent and have better success with backing off the volume on the guitar pot to 'clean up' the sound, similar to a Mark or the LoneStart series amps, which have less gain available. Has anyone noticed a big difference in tone and performance by putting a 12AT7 in the Phase inverter tube socket.

Yes, I've done it on every Mesa amp I've ever owned, and thought it improved all of them in exactly that way - clearer, deeper and less compressed.
