I just picked up my new Recto-Verb head. I find that the clean could be smoother with different pre-amp tubes. I find the Chinese pre's a little too bright. Any suggestions here. I am 45, so I really like the classic rock tones, but sometimes I like to shred. Anybody tried any EL-34's in there Recto? Suggestions.

I have yet to try it, but I understand el34's in a Recto will give you more of that classic British crunch, but quite frankly, thats not what this amp excels at, its a modern voiced amp. With that said though, with the stock 6l6's, a Les Paul and the correct amp settings, I used my Dual Rec in bar bands playing Zep, Stones, Tull, Who convincingly.

As far as the Chinese pre's being too bright, try the new Tung Sol reisues or the EH's. I refuse to suggest JJ's, even though others love them, my experience was they lacked gain and where too dark - made my Mesa muffled sounding.
