Overdrive/Distortion Pedals - Why Do You Use Them?

Sorry to dig up an older thread, but here's a thought that I didn't see presented:

An overdrive pedal will give you access to a sound that isn't inherent to your amp. For example, my Electra Dyne has a great clean tone, and I use VHi and VLo for crunch and "full distortion". With that setup, I don't have an option for an almost clean tone, you know mostly clean, but just a little fur when you really dig in. A clean boost or low-gain OD gives me immediate access to that tone without messing with my guitar's volume knob. I love playing with the volume and tone knobs as they really give you access to infinitely many tones, but in a gig situation I want immediate access and consistency. This is what a boot/OD gives.
