Hi all,

Looking at ways of shaving some weight from my MKIII (purple stripe, simul class).

Any problems with losing the fan? After all, most amps do okay without one...

I'm already gonna put the EV in a Thiele cab and stick an Eminence Deltalite in the combo, just wondering if I can lose any more weight. Love the amp, but hate carrying the ting up flights of stairs!

Thanks in advance,

W.

removing the fan won't make a difference in the weight. If you really want to cut weight, remove the transformers, or peel everything from the chassis and put the guts in a backpack

or
maybe stick it in a head shell

Wolfchild,

I would not ditch the fan. I did find a "whisper quiet" fan and put one in both my .50 Caliber (EL84 style - NOT THE PLUS) and replaced the one in my Mark III. I have the experience of the power tubes losing that "something" when the amp & PC board starts to heat up . This is especially true in my .50 Caliber since the power tube sockets are directly soldered on the PC board itself. I will have to look at the fans I got and try to find the place I ordered them at if you are interested.

I have a Mark III blue strip 60 watter with no fan. bought it off my buddy who never had a fan in it either, and both of us play in full time bands and never had an issue. I read somewhere the simul-class ones probably need one as they run hotter, but all I have experience with is my III.

The Simuls definitely run hotter than a 60 watt Mark if for no other reason than there being four power tubes.
Believe it or not the new fans Mesa uses are pretty quiet.
They are made by Globe Mfg and the Globe part number is:

(****! I can't find it right now. I posted it in a thread and had it bookmarked - both of which got deleted...
When I get home I'll pull out a receipt and let you know the part number.)

Maybe read these threads too (similar topic)

Here is the link to the fan I use. Good air flow and low noise.

Had it on during a recording and the sound engineer couldn't believe how quiet it is. Close mike and a combo amp.
