I have read here before that the MB cables go bad. Mine stopped working last week and I used a Fishman cable for the gig. There is a big difference is the quality of the Fishman and the MB cables, night and day.

I looked at the MB jacks and they appear to be OK. Where do these breaks happen? In the wire itself?

Yeah, I think they just eventually give way to stress on the cable (bending, twisting, getting stepped on). My Recto 7-pin cable went bad, and when i plugged it in the amp made a terrible hissing noise and it tried to turn both ch2 and ch3 on at the same time. I replaced the cable and everything works perfect again. It was only $19.99, so it wasn't that bad, since it lasted my about 3 years, and many concerts.
