    Subway Blues advice?

Well, it's probably a bit late for this post. You want the Subway Blues version that has the single input jack and the Fat/Bright switch. The earlier version with the two input jacks had some serious problems with noise. If this is the older one and it has been back to Mesa (receipts are your...

    Music Man Amps

The power section of the Music Man amps was tube with a solid state rectifier. I know one model ran 4 - 6CA7 and was rated well over 100 watts. Most MM amps have a single preamp tube, except it's not. Phase inverter. A VERY few early ones had tubes in the preamp but were still hybrid. So...

Mesa pedal to replace my TS9

Try a Tech 21 pedal. I have the Tri-AC and love it. I want to try the Double Drive 3x. All the Character pedals sound great for what they are, you probably wouldn't care for the Fender model but the Mesa models (US Steel is one) are really nice.

    Subway Rocket Pre Amp Tubes

V1 is the preamp tube closest to the input jack on all Mesa amps. That JBL looks like a great speaker. Stick with a 10", even if you could stuff a 12" in there the cabinet is too small to let it sound any bigger. You may have to rear mount the JBL, the front flange is pretty thick and may not...

    Subway Rocket noise issue

Clean all jacks, tube sockets and pots. Remove chassis, confirm ground to shielded upper inside cabinet. Original 3 prong power cord shows no signs of damage? Try swapping tubes one at a time with a known good tube. May have a leaking cap or other circuit component on the fritz.

    Tele love

Current Tele is a Zola Swamp Ash body, Moses graphite neck, brass saddles, Shaller tuners, EMG SA neck and EMG 85 bridge. If you can't do it with a Tele, you can't do it!!! Noted Teleists: Early Jeff Beck Jimmy Page Keith Richards Roy Buchanan Albert Lee The Hellecasters Bill Frissell Danny...

    Subway Rocket Pre Amp Tubes

I've had a couple of Subways (see list below). Cool little amps, great grab and go. In my opinion the first best thing you can do is replace the speaker. On my Subway Blues I also front-mounted it, pretty easy to do with some T-nuts from the hardware store. Every cubic inch helps with that tiny...

    Orange launches valve/tube tester

In that same price range or maybe a bit less, one could hunt down a Hickok tube tester. Much more tedious to use but still considered the standard by most tube weirdos. In the end, markedman is correct. Plug it in and listen.

    Orange launches valve/tube tester

And yet, here we are on this board where amplifiers running 4 power tubes needing 425 volts each plug into a wall socket that is only 110 volts? It's either automatical or magics!!!! Just kidding, I totally see your point. Even if they put some beefy capacitors in there (it's too...

    Very poorly Nomad 45

There are potentially fatal voltages inside your amp, even if it has been off and sitting for some time. You need to discharge the power supply caps. All things considered in your OP, I would take this to a tech so you don't ruin it or kill yourself. :D

Mesa Maverick 1x12 - what are some good overdrives to pair?

Sounds like you will prefer using the solid state rectifier instead of the tube. Tighter bass that way. I pulled the stock Black Shadow out and put in a JBL G125-8, much better sounding bass response. In larger venues I would add a 1-12" cab with a Peavey Scorpion Ultra (good luck finding one...

Mesa Maverick 1x12 - what are some good overdrives to pair?

I just used the Lead channel when I owned a Mav. Run the tube rectifier and turn the amp up a bit, will sing nicely.

    Subway Rocket speaker replacement question

I put a Peavey Scorpion 10" in mine, sounded fuller than the stock speaker. Then I pulled it back out and sold it. If I ever get another Subway it will be the Subway Blues, I liked that one better. Put the Scorpion in it as well, also an improvement. I have a Scorpion Plus 10" laying around...

    Music Man Amps

I've owned 2 RD-50, one a 1-10 the other a 1-12. Well made, compact, big sound. Chet Atkins used an RD-50 112 for a decade or more touring. Clean tone was stellar, reverb was pretty OK, distortion tone was usable but not versatile. Interesting aspect of RD-50 was that the PI was solid state...

Mesa Boogie Early Mark 1 ?

V1 on a Mesa will be the preamp tube closest to the input jack.

    Resurrecting a Neglected DC-3

I just refurbished a DC-5 and now it sounds great. Clean your jacks. I used a small piece of 180 grit sandpaper rolled up tight and spun it inside the jacks to break the corrosion free, then sprayed with electronics cleaner (an aggressive, non-residue type for jacks). Then while the cleaner was...

    Convert dc5 combo to head?

I would look for an original Mesa head cab. There is one on ebay right now. Cutting down the original cabinet cleanly and precisely is much harder than it looks due to the slant of the front of the cabinet. You would be better off just building a new cab from scratch. That way you could at...

Tube replacement with other than Mesa or Groove Tubes.

Nice rigs!! I could see there not being much difference with 4-12 cabs, especially the two that are loaded with Celestions. Each individual speaker is not being asked to yield as much performance potential and you have plenty of bottom end when you can move that much air. By the time you get up...

Tube replacement with other than Mesa or Groove Tubes.

It would be fun to hang out and rip a few licks through your rigs. I agree that the amps make a big difference in sound. My Blue Angel sounded very different than my Subway Rocket or my Mark IIIC. You would have fun hanging out at my place and listening to the difference when I swapped the...

    Lost volume on Mesa DC-3

Try plugging a cable in from the Send to the Return on the effects loop. The jacks are probably dirty, pretty common problem. I just fixed it on my DC-5.
