Bias mod on a 50/50 : how to do

Hi, The bias is provided to all the sockets through the bias circuit. For that red plating tube I would check the screen resistor first, then maybe the grid resistor and input resistor. If their values are correct, could be the power transformer.

    mark v problem its down

If you have no fan, no light and 2 preamp tube not glowing (1 & 2 ?) but everything else seems to be "on", then the DC supply has failed, maybe it has its own fuse.

    Mark V recording

I use it @home with a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2, or when recording with the band with a M-Audio Profire 2626. You can also record direct via its USB interface, but only in 48/96 KHz. One good option is to record (either way) WITHOUT the cab/mic simulation and then use the Wall of Sound plugin to...

    Question about Channel 1

Your bass and mids are pretty low, try to rise their level to bring more body. Also try the tweed mode with very low gain, it definitely add some body to the sound.

    Stereo 50/50 preamp order question

From left to right : V1 V2 V3. V1 is the input stage (1/2 12AX7 for each channel) V2 and V3 are phase inverters for channel A and B

    Mark V recording

I use a Two-Notes Torpedo Live for recording, that thing is just pure magic !

    2:90 sudden rise in level/volume

If it happens only on one channel : +1 volume pot. Cheap fix, and if it doesn't fix it is not bad thing. Both chanels : related to V1 preamp tube/component (or bad power trany with voltage variations, hope not)

New love affair with Mark V Combo, Jensen Black Bird

DO a bias mod on the MkV. That amp is **** hot ! Standard Mesa tubes were running over 100% in the Mark V, and they get even hotter in 45W mode. Now I can adjust the bias and turn it a little down with a bearly noticeable sound change, but absolutely no red plate anymore !

Bias mod on a 50/50 : how to do

Yep better idea to put a 50k trimpo in series with a 50k resistor !

Bias mod on a 50/50 : how to do

Yep, just checked it and the first post is empty.... don't know why ! Short version : replace R242 (68k) with a 100k trimpot WARNING ! Lethal voltages inside. Unplug before doing the mod. Put the STBDY switch in the ON position : Check the big caps for zero voltage, they should drain through...

Mesa fifty fifty heater resistors toasted

Looks like the yellow wire is just resoldered further to the same track. About the resistors, you can replace them with 100ohm 2W 5% metal film, they are just there for heather-to-ground reference.

    Mesa Quad Preamp

If you have volume balance problems within the 2 channels, check that : http://forum.grailtone.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=7431

Mesa tubes or others? Full re-tube, what to buy?

Big +1 Great home tones rarely find their place in a band/live situation. One word : mids !

Mesa tubes or others? Full re-tube, what to buy?

Try MkI mode (thick switch off, bass all the way down)

It seems that some push-pull pots works only on ouput A or B (but can't remember which...)

    it came with el34s

4 or 8 tentacles ? important for the choice of tubes... I'm a EL34 fan in the MkV, I'll never go back to 6L6GC. Well, I could if there were no keyboard or bass in the band ! The EL34 really cut through and set the guitar in the right place in the mix.

For the knob you can call Mesa or check on tubeampdoctor. About the settings, for saturated sounds don't try to get something huge with the standard EQ. Turn up treble and middle, turn down bass around "2" and then shape the result with the GEQ.

Bias mod on a 50/50 : how to do

Right, this how to mount a pot as a variable resistor. Depending which lug you solder the center tap with, the rotation can be reversed for increasing/decreasing the value. That's all. Again, be very carefull when openig a tube amp as there are lethal voltages inside. For the 50/50, unplug the...

Bias mod on a 50/50 : how to do

The bias circuit act on both channels, so only one pot is needed. It could be interesting to mod the circuit and have two separated bias pot, so two totally different tube pairs could be used together. However it's a more complicated mod that need to alterate the board or add another. The pot...
