Toning down reverb in Fillmore 50

I got a Fillmore 50 head a couple of weeks ago. I love the amp. It's exactly what I hoped it would be. The only thing that is disappointing is the reverb as you mentioned. Having read your post earlier I tried a few different 12AX7, 12AT7 and one 12AU7 in V5 (V5A is Reverb Return and V5B is...

Amp Recommendation: Fender Convert - Need help choosing a Mesa - 5:50 Express Plus, LSC, LSS, or something else? Help

I don't have any experience with the Lone Star or Express amps, but like you I have always wanted a Fender like, rich clean tone but also the ability to get to light (or more) breakup at much lower decibel levels (for home use and practice) than can be achieved even in the Deluxe Reverb or...

Mark III power tube break up - doesn't seem possible

I want to thank everyone for your kind replies to this thread. My initial inquiry was meant to seek answers regarding the potential possibility of output tube breakup as an additional tone "tool" to use in my Mark III, and thanks to the many helpful replies to this thread and after speaking...

Mark III power tube break up - doesn't seem possible

Awesome! Thanks for sharing. I bet you're right about the eardrums and about the amp sounding great when opened up like that.

Mark III power tube break up - doesn't seem possible

Excellent points all around. When I made my initial post I didn't fully understand how the output section was designed to work in these amps. I was aware that they were designed to create a full range of tube saturated breakup, all the way up to insane levels of extreme metal tones, all from...

Mark III power tube break up - doesn't seem possible

Excellent points about the EV 250 watt speaker, etc. And yes, I agree that driving that speaker to breakup, and possible the output section of my particular Mark III, could be dangerous to any living thing within the amp's "blast zone" ha ha.

Mark III power tube break up - doesn't seem possible

On some other master volume amps such as Marshall it's possible to achieve: a) preamp breakup with the preamp (Volume/Gain) turned up higher and the power amp turned down lower and running "clean" b) poweramp breakupi with the preamp set lower and not breaking up but with the master volume...

Mark III power tube break up - doesn't seem possible

Which version of Mark III do you have (ie what color stripe)? I can't get poweramp overdrive even with the Master on 10, so hearing you are getting it on 4 or 5 makes me think you may have a different version of Mark III. Running the Master on 4 or 5 means you are only driving the output tubes...

Mark III power tube break up - doesn't seem possible

I have tried with the Master on 10, Volume on 10 in Rhythm 1/Clean and with my guitar volume on 10 also and never got any output tube saturation/breakup. I have even gone up to 8 in Rhythm 2 but never got anything different than the preamp breakup that was present at lower settings of the...

    Mark III bass control question

I assume you are referring to preamp distortion? I posted an inquiry regarding output tube saturation and would love your input on that if you have any. As for the bass control, remember the effectiveness of both bass and mid are dependent upon the setting of treble. The higher treble is set...

Mark III power tube break up - doesn't seem possible

Thanks Fernando. I agree that the Boogie preamp breakup is better than that of many other amps, I still want to tap into the different tonal characteristics of saturating the output tubes. Having pushed the amp almost as hard as it will go in rhythm 2 (8 on Volume with Master on 10) and...

Mark III power tube break up - doesn't seem possible

I have a green stripe Mark III that I purchased new around 1989-90. For many years I ran the Master down very low so I could drive the preamp section for tube saturation and breakup in Rhythm 2. However along the way I learned the difference in preamp tube and output (“power”) tube...

6L6 str 441 make and model?

Does anyone know the brand and model of the Mesa 6L6 str 441 as well as the other Mesa 6L6 offerings (6L6 str 440, 6L6 str 445, and 5881 str 425)? Have any of you tried the 441 tubes in place of the 440? Thanks for any input.
