For the grunge stuff, you could follow Cobains lead. He used a Mesa Studio Pre-amp with a Boss DS-1 and ran it into a solid state Crown poweramp. Most of that stuff you can pick up for decent prices on eBay, and you'll have a bit of cash left over to blow on other goodies.

Put it at the front of the chain. You want the signal from the guitar to be as noise-free as it can be before it goes into your pedals, otherwise they can increase that noise.

Mark 3 and I believe DiMarzio Super Distorions in his Flying V. He also used some kind of old Morley echo/chorus pedal thing that gave him that 'boxy' sound too.

I wouldn't waste cash on one of those boxes. They'll affect your tone. As you turn them down you'll find they bleed treble off. It's the same as when you turn the volume down on a guitar. You can never preserve the true tone even using a treble bleed capacitor.

Will the molds sound better with 6L6's or EL34's though?

Unfortunately not. Stuck the new valves in, set of EH Golds, which I think sound great, but still no reverb. I dunno, maybe it's that one missing spring in the reverb pan, I don't know if that could cause it, but I might try and see about getting that fixed just in case.

Loving the tone, Ytse. I've not even had a chance to crank mine yet. The poweramp I have is so loud even when I put it a notch past 1, and I don't want the neighbours on my case. Gonna invest in a Presonus Inspire firewire interface, and see how the Studio sounds through that right into the PC...
