High pitched hum or tone ,,, is this right

Post by sonny7 » Sat May 04, 2019 5:19 pm

Hello fellow Mesa boogie lovers. Question for TC 50 owners. I recently got a combo. I noticed a very very light high pitched “ hum” or tone coming from the amp when not on standby. Sounds like a tea pot whistle lol. When you play you don’t hear it, but when your not u can. Anyone with a TC be able to tell me if this is how it is??? I could see it being a slight issue recording and it is a little annoying
Any info appreciated.

I’ll load a clip to you tube. I did post on the Mesa/boogie owners forum on face book

Are you using pedals?

Do you have any effects in the effects loop?

It makes the sound when nothing is plugged in. Plugging in anything doesn’t alter the sound.

Then I’m not sure. I’d start by moving the amp a couple feet to the side to see if it’s interferance (make sure you don’t have a phone or iPad sitting on top of it), and if that doesn’t work verify that are the tubes are properly seated.

Would that be common for a BRAND NEW amp to have to already move tubes around. This is my first tube combo ,,,, I be been using heads for 30 years. First day was great ( except realizing the change in reverb ) and now the second day this constant “whistle”. I posted a clip on fb Mesa biggie owners forum.

Anyway is this acceptable to start moving tubes after two days???

Thanks

Anything could’ve happened to it during shipping.

The whistle sounds abnormal. The only time I’ve experienced something similar was with a ground loop via my pedalboard, and it went away when I sorted my pedalboard out. I suggest the tubes because it’s easy and most issues with tube amps are tube related. If that doesn’t sort it out I’d return it for another one.

I tried changing the pre amp tubes one at a time. No change. Tapped on power tubes. Nothing. The store is really good and said they’ll get me another. Now I am just thinking maybe be better to just get the head and a 1x12 cab,,,? ( I have a OS recto 4x12 and a vert recto 2x12.
I was gettign a combo for easier portability.

I prefer heads and cabs.

Every time I get a combo for portability I wind up regretting it... mostly because I think closed back cabs sound better for the kind of music I play.

I totally empathize with closed back cabs,,, I been playing a dual rec for 19 years usually through OS 4x12 or the vertcile 2x12

Anyway brought combo back,,, the only tubes I did not ( could not) change out were the power tubes. The guy let me swap some out he had in stock and the ringing stopped. The sound as a ringing in your ears or high pitched tea whistle stopped. I had the amp plugged in for 4 hours ,,, played on it and nothing. So I hope that was it BTW,,, I got the combo for practicality,,, but plugging that through the vertical 2x12 was pretty killer sounding.

Definitely opened the combo up.
Let you know if there are any changes but thank you sincerely for all your suggestions and info. I this was one of the only times I ever posted but been reading for over a decade.
