first things first, i know electradynes arent made for this, im just curious to see how heavy it can get, or to see how it sounds with a boost.

thanks

Well...not metal, but certainly heavy.
Here's Soundgarden on Conan. Kim Thayil uses an ED and a Roadster
on this tune.
At :044, you can see the head, vintage Hi mode on.

gotta feel like most of that heaviness is from the roadster??

I wouldn't be to sure about that. I had a RoadKing and the ED has every bit as much low end as it had.

I think with your OCD (freaking amazing overdrive, why the hell did I sell mine) it will get you most of the way there. Throw an EQ in the loop and you are all the way there.

As you pointed out, this probably isn't what the ED was made for. But man it has so much low end that if you add a touch more gain and use an EQ in the loop to carve out the tone it will do it, and I think do it well.

I can get real close to recto with an EQ in the loop.

I have not done any modern metal clips, but if you search the ED forum on threads started by me, you will find a couple threads where I have posted me using the ED on Master of puppets. No boost at bedroom volume.

I also did some 80's style metal with a boost in a couple other threads.

Your best bet is to Bring your OCD with you and try it out. It does everything else short of modern metal very nicely.

good, thanks for the tip.
basically, on my express all i like is the the only thing i liked within 5 min of playing on it: the clean channel

Heres a clip I found on youtube. The 2nd half is more metal.

I've been messing around with my "metal" guitar and Vintage Hi...I can't make any clips, but my favorite settings have been as follows:

Volume: 5:00, or 3:00 with a tubescreamer
Treble: 3:00
Middle: 8:00 - 9:00 (this amp sounds REALLY at home scooped! and I'm, usually not into that kinda thing)
Bass: 2:00
Presence: adjust to taste, if you like a more deep, chugga sound, keep it low. For a tighter, more cutting "djent" sound, turn it up
Master: as loud as possible \m/

I can get a really heavy, almost Petrucci-esque tone with these settings...this amp can definitely do metal!

Just so we are clear here, since nobody pointed it out thus far, Kim Thayil is not using a Roadster. He uses an ED and a Tremoverb combo. He has been using the Dual Rec Tremoverb for years and just added the ED head recently. In the video on Conan he clearly has an ED head on top of a Tremoverb combo.

Where did the Roadster come into the equation? I believe he used to use an Ibanez Roadster guitar though.

I get some great metal tones without a boost by scooping the mids with a similar eq as stated above. Running KT66's in the power sections and pushing them at 45 watts creates a powerful thick/heavy tone. Running an EMG 85 also balances well with the vintage high mode and can even get into modern metal territory. This would be the only amp where a Sonic Maximizer may sound good in the loop if you want to really get a more modern sound. I may have to try it out... :) When I'm not planning a wedding and graduating college ill try to record some clips.

=-o DO WANT!

So you really can get 'close enough' to recto territory if the 'Dyne is more your thing? Interesting.

Wedding planning!?? ;) Maybe someone will get you an Electra Dyne for a wedding present? My wife and I went to Maui for our Honeymoon. That would have got me 2 Dynes! If only I had known!! =-p

I'm not a fan of this band, but while looking around on the Fuel TV's Daily Habit website I ran across A Skylit Drive playing a very familiar amp to the right. It's probably the heaviest band I've found that uses the ED. They have the Electra Dyne paired with a 5150 III and it holds its own. I feel the ED is definitely more musical but still did great with the heavier tones. Please ignore the singer, he's terrible.

The whole emo whiny I want to sound like a girl countertenor thing is weird. I didn't think he was 'bad' as far as rock singers go, but maybe a bit pitchy. Can you imagine trying to sing on tune that high!???

Definitely dig that sort of a tone and I can see the Electra Dyne producing it with the right guitar / pickup set on 90watts. Thanks for the link, it was always bugging me that all the bands playing Electra Dynes all play wuss music.

Touche

But at least their guitar tone was 'heavy!!'

What I meant to say is that most bands that have Electra Dyne using guitarists generally use clean and low gain tones. It is nice to hear a band using the Electra Dyne for its positively sexy high gain tones for a change!!!

I was too stunned by the dude who sounded like Avril Lavigne to notice the guitar tones.

I spent most of the video pondering whether the vocalist was one of those straight dudes that performed in gay porn movies for the money... or if his performance actually provided him some form of artistic satisfaction.

The one time I did actually try to listen to the guitars I was distracted by the dude playing the same three notes one handed on the keyboard... and then the other dude started screaming and totally thew me off for the rest of the video.

When I was growing up I always wondered what kind of music future kids would listen to that would drive me up a wall. I mean, I already listen to some fairly extreme music and I wondered how much more extreme it could get before I'd actually hate it.

I never expected this.

Yeah, when I first heard A Skylit Drive I honestly thought that they had a girl singer. I like other bands in their genre, Memphis May Fire, The Devil Wears Prada, We Came As Romans, Chiodos (only their new album) and a few others who still have a basis in Metal/Hardcore. But the ridiculous feminine, high pitched vocals and pointless electronic elements drive me up the wall. I don't mind some programming to help fill out the song, but when it's over done, it ruins it for me.

But yes, it was nice to see a heavier band who appreciates the ED for the heavier tones. I looked at what what amp the guitar player previously used and it was a Dual Rectifier, I think the ED does the job quite nicely.

You really need to check out some avant garde classical. I can still appreciate this music. That stuff, not so much.
I'm actually impressed with the one handed keyboard player playing 3 notes. Most of them cram hundreds of notes into each second. That IRRITATES ME NO END. Hey, playing Brahms Symphonies nobody in the audience complained about the 20 As I played in a row =-o

The guitarist thinks the same way I do. The Dual Rectifier was the best for me until Mesa went and made the Electra Dyne. Why couldn't they have made that amp ten years ago!?? It would have saved me $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$s in GAS.

I've been kind of avoiding saying this because I don't want to be mis-quoted by people who take what I'm about to say too literally, but...

IMO the ED is kind of a natural extension of the Dual Rectifier sound. To me, it contains a lot of the same feel as the Recto along with some sense of the tonal balance, only much lower in gain.

The two amps also pair really well together in an A/B setup. The Recto provides the high gain while the ED provides those low-to-mid gain rhythm tones that have never been the Rectos strong point.... all without the big hole in the sound that can happen when A/Bing another amp against the massive low end of a Recto.
