New to BOOGIE and aint looking back

Hello:…I’m new to the forum and to Mesa Amps, although I have been visiting this forum daily for all most a year now I thought it was time to join. I found this forum in my quest to learn more about the Mark V amp. The V seemed to be a jack of all trades and had really peaked my interest after playing it. It really sounded great. Truth be told after spending several months in this forum reading threads on the amp I came to the conclusion that there were too many problems reported with this amp. I put my GAS aside and continued with my quest for a new Tube/Valve amp. I just did not want the hassle of all the bugs the V seems to have.

(History)….I have been playing guitar since 1986 and have always been a Marshall user.. In the mid 90’s I sold my Marshalls and began playing solid state amps..I was not gigging anymore and a huge stack was not needed; plus I needed the money I got from letting the stack go…..over the last year I have really been missing the tube tone as I am finding solid state kind of sterile…Not to say I cant get good sounds out of my solid state amps, I just want some more, ya know?.... Marshall is not making anything I really like these days. Not to say their bad amps I just need something with a switchable wattage for different applications. That is the first thing that caught me with the Mark V.. But again after the bad publicity with the V, I ended up in the Electra Dyne page here.



After some reading on the Dyne and hearing only praise and accolades on it I checked out the few demos out there, again my interest was yet again peaked. Two weeks ago I gave a dyne a demo and instantly fell in love. Wow is all I can say about this amp it sounds so good and is simple to get around on…..Last week my wife ordered an Electra Dyne head that should be here tomorrow or the next day. Needless to say I’m on pins and needles waiting. I look forward to years of enjoyment with the Dyne and look forward to continue to learn more about Mesa from forum members here……

Nice choice for your first Mesa! I've had a Studio Series, a Tremoverb, and now the ED, and the simplicity of the controls and the complexity of the sounds is amazing!

Oh, and the Amp is killer too-
I bought a 112 combo, had some issues with it that weren't resolved at the local shop, but my replacement should be here tomorrow. Its a 212 and I hope it doesn't sound as good as the 112, because I am not a big guy, and that amp is like 100 lbs.......

The V is a good amp. You just have to consider the volume of V's out there you are going to hear about more problems simply because there are more of them to have problems.

That said, I was in guitar center today in Raleigh and they had a Mark V combo sitting right next to an Electra Dyne combo. I turned them both on and just went back and forth between them.

After flipping back and forth between the two I have zero regrets. The ED was so much thicker then the V it just wasn't comparable.

It seemed the ED was also considerably heavier then the V. Maybe my imagination. I tried to pick up the V and it didn't seem that bad. I couldn't pickup the ED cause it had another amo on top of it. So I couldn't side by side them weight wise. I just remembered the ED being heavier

I have gone back and forth with an ED and the V and the V combo was WEAK and THIN by comparison....not even open for debate I am afraid. The ED rocks

Great choice. I just picked up my first boogie. The ED ( I hate saying that, reminds me of the Cialis comercials) is such a great sounding amp. I never thought I would get rid of my Rivera but man this just sounds so good.

Mark V is a tinkerer's amp. I don't think I had a real clue how to get good tones out of the Mark IV for a year or two after I got it. The FIVE is easier, but if you're not paying attention while you're tweaking you can go from tone nirvana to thin/buzzy in one tiny increment. That's once you have an idea of how to balance all the tone controls so the base tone is appropriate for the job.

The Dyne is plug and play, I don't own one yet.. but i'm thinking of selling my Hamer Californian and jcm900 to fund one just so I can have a combo amp around the house.

Except for my decals wearing off, the FIVE is rock solid IMO.

Thanks guys….head should be here today according to the UPS tracker….ordered a 4x12 recto cab from the Hollywood store but no idea when it will get here. Picked it up used but they have no box to ship it in until they sell a new one in the store. Then they have to ship it from California to Carolina…who knows when I will get it……In the mean time I am wondering if the Dyne will drive my Marshall MG 4x12a cab without eating the speakers for lunch…..what do you guys think?……I will not be gigging it so the volume will not be anything crazy, just enough to drive some good sounds. I see no reason why it should be a problem other than the MG cab don’t have the best speakers in it and may not sound as good as it will with the Mesa cab with the V30’s

Yeah I guess there would seem to be more problems with the V because there are more of them out there, but I’m glad I had developed a biased which gave me chance to hear the Dyne…to my ear it just sounds way better. I don’t regret my choice at all…..now if the dang thing would just get here…..LOL

I finally got the Beast last night….sounds so awesome. I had forgotten how loud tube amps were; test drove it only at master of 2 or 3 and was shaking the windows and items on the shelves…….I also can’t believe how heavy this head is…it is literally heavier than my 4x12 cab. I sure am never going to lift this thing up to the configuration of a full stack that’s for sure…aint got the back for that anymore

Let us know how it compares sonically with the 112 version.
Yeah, I ain't a big guy and I have no interest in hoisting that in and out of my car a few times a month.
