I will have my Mark 5 as of next Friday and wanted to see if anyone knows how to compensate since there is no volume 1. Looking a metallica-esque tone out of it and I know I need to simulate that volume 1 on 9 as per Rasmussen's notes. Would a decent solution be to up the gain or presence for more bite or what? :?:

It's really not that big of a deal. I think you'd get more by throwing a couple of AT7's in the V4 and V6 preamp slots and putting an additional eq pedal in the fx loop in *addition to* the built-in fx loop.

I'd certainly like to know what other people have to say about it, though.

You can absolutely ballpark it without worrying about the volume 1 control just with a similar EQ settings and another EQ in the loop. If you really want to try and simulate raising it after that (and you don't want to bust out a soldering iron) then a clean boost pedal in front boosting a little bit might resemble it.
