(thank you Mick & Keef)

So on of my never ever, ever used EL-34s blew last night. Lots of rattles, pops and general noise... clearly a tube. My initial thought is that I would swap the Yellow Jackets in the 10 and 50 watt positions because clearly I blew the 10 watt tube. I'm only ever in the 10 watt setting.

That didn't work.

It turned out to be one of the EL34s. I had another duet handy so this was no big deal.

However, how can one of those tubes be the one that blew? Any ideas?

All four tubes do some work even in the lower watt mode. The lower watt mode lifts the grounds on the cathodes on two tubes, I believe.
