Hey Guys,

Yes I'm back.

Still have my Marshall JVM410HJS and 4 x 12 Cab,but.
Need to have a smaller grab and go amp, save the old back.

Wow had the 1 x 10 before.
Now have the new 1 x 12 with a Vintage 30.

Sounded great in the store.
But now I have it home, I'm not liking the V30 - sound a bit boxy and spiky to me.

Here we go again.

Cheers.

Gezza.

How loud do you play? How big a room typically?

I changed the speaker to a Cannabis Rex. The V30 sounded spiky to me as well. The CR or TT 40/40 are something to think about. I don't really hear boxy with my 5:25 Plus Work with your mid tone control or graphic EQ. The volume you play could make a difference. I play a small club occasionally, really like the way this amp sounds - you get to drive the output tubes and transformer.

Hey,

I would say, pretty loud.
Classic Rock band.

Funny, I went from a Mesa Boogie Express, to a Marshall JVM410HJS and 4 x 12 Quad Box and now back.

I love the Marshall and may never sell it.
But it's really heavy to cart around.
Plus I used my old express for about 5 years and was really happy with my tone.
something about EL84 -

I found an old doughnut that I made years ago out of foam, so I put that in.
Seems to have tamed the spike and shrill that was there. Or I'm starting to get used to it!

I have band rehearsal this Thursday, so that will be the decider.

Cheers for now.

Hey Guys,

I just wanted to ask.

On the MB web site they have videos of the 5:25+.
Now they are using a compact 1 x 12 speaker cab with Celestion V30.

So they have a V30 in the 5:25+ and a 1 x 12 cab with V30.

I have the exact same, but I have the EV - Theile Cab with V30.
I find my tone to be very different.
Even if I dial the same settings.

So perhaps they have some special things going on.

Don't get me wrong - I really like the clean tone.
But getting a fatter Rhythm tone is the quest I'm on.

Looks like many people have changed the Speaker in the Cab.
I may explore that after Thursday's rehearsal.

Cheers,

Gezza.

Ok Geeza, a couple ideas: Is your V30 "broken in"? I also have/had Marshall's and Carvin's before getting my first Mesa, which happened to be a 5:25 non plus with a V30. It took a bit to get used to. I also have an extension cab I enjoy pairing with this amp, it is a 1x12 with Greenback (open back cab). I have been very pleased with the results of this mini-stack. I use the little combo amp on its own for small gigs and practice, and bring out my big gun (Roadster) for the larger gigs.

Hey Guys,

Well coming back from a quad box is pretty hard.

I am really surprised how loud the Burn channel is.
But on the other hand the clean channel needs to up fairly high.

At this point I hate the V30 - to harsh and brittle.
My ears were ringing after rehearsal.

My solo's were thin sound with no body.
Also I found the solo feature - useless with a lot of gain, I just couldn't get a liquid lead tone.

So where to go from here.

Speaker, Tubes?

Gezza.

Speaker. Lots of suggestions in the board and others. I like the Eminence Cannabis Rex. Tone Tubby 40/40 is said to be similar. Others like Scumback, Weber, Celestion. I did not like the V30 either. Others really like it. A separate cab is an option.

Try driving your Marshall 4x12 with it and see if you like it better, maybe that will give you a sense of which way to go with speakers (unless, the 4x12 has V30's). I get some pretty good tones by cutting back on the bass, mid and treble, and not using so much gain (typically in the 9-11 o clock range). I find that works for me in all modes, but tone is so subjective - what I like, you may not, etc..

Hey Guys,

Thanks for your replies guys.
I really want to use the 5:25+ and small cab for rehearsals and the Marshall for gigs.

Now I had some time to really play this thing, yesterday.

All I can say, that speaker! Why MB.

I recorded many different settings.
Eq on, eq off, versus contour, then one slider up, ect.
I found a new eq setting that took out a lot of that harshness.
Seems to be around the 750hz.

Then I compare it to no Eq, horrible spiky and harsh.

So it's definitively the speaker I am not bonding with.

I have a speaker supplier not far from me.
He stocks, WGS, Celestion, Jensen, Eminence.
He said come over and try some speakers out.

I have posted some pics of my settings.
Would love to hear from some members, what you think.

So will report back, soon.

Gezza.

Hey Guys,

Not sure if anyone is even interested.

I just finished a 24hr low frequency burn in.
I set the freq to 65hz.

OK, EQ re-sent, speaker has some break in time.

I have rehearsal tonight, so I will let you all know.

Cheers,

Gezza.

Wow,

Such a difference.
Had rehearsal last night.
It sound Fantastic, big and fat.

I did increase the Bass and Mids on the Burn channel.

So what are you waiting for do it.

Gezza.

Update.

I 've decided to sell the 5:25+.
I just love the Marshall Tone.
What a waste of time and money.

Ah well, I did like, just not love it.

Cheers,

Gezza.
