I am retubing my two Mesa's shortly, and was wondering - I see a lot of "custom" tubes in preamp sections regarding position v1; but Mesa's tube task chart for the Express shows V2 is the first gain stage. So, should the "high gain type" tubes be used there, or in multiple positions? I am curious as to other's opinions.

Typically a matter of opinion and experimentation. Using a high gain in V2 will give every mode more, depends if you like what it does to both clean and other modes. Usually a low noise is used in the first gain stage, but if you like more gain everywhere go for it.

Everyone has an opinion, and its really easy to spend someone else's money.

Mine is to talk with Doug about what sound/tone you're wanting. Doug's Tubes

He has been a godsend to a number of folks here. I didn't like the overall tone of my new 5:50+. I called Doug. He gave me advice and I replaced every tube, including the 6L6s. He was dead on!
