I changed the speaker out in my new thiele cab with the ev in my Mark III combo. When I mounted the logo on the grill cover I made a small hole in the foam on the edge of the speaker. Will this hurt the speaker? I thought this was just to protect the speaker when rear mounted in a cabinet.
 
If you mean the foam gasket around the very edge of the speaker that won't hurt anything. But I don't think any of my Ev's had a foam gasket they all have hard paper or card board. My Ev's don't have a foam cone suspension either so I would assume your not talking about the cone suspension.
