Mark III Stripes and tone differences

I notice that most Mark III's are noted to be a purple stripe or red stripe, etc. What are the tonal differences? Are the differences vague or pronounced? I'm looking for a version to give me a nice super smooth sustaining lead tone minus the grit. I assume the EVM is a no-brainer?

One thing to note. You can always talk to Mike Bendinelli at Mesa and have almost any stripe modified to match almost and other stripe. I had my black dot Mark III modified to a "C+" and have never been happier.
