Just noticed that my Mark IV has a speaker that is labeled as Black Shadow EVM with power handling of 400W. I have read about Electro Voice's 200W speaker in Mark 4s but could not find info about the 400W version. The speaker's sn is 000476, is this some odd version of the amp? It does not have satellite connections so I understand the amp is MK4-A type (thanks boogiebabies!).

Tks & Happy New Year!

Wait until I test the amp with 4 x 6L6s instead of the EL34/6L6 combo that is in it now!

Are you sure it is not a misprint on the Mesa label. The most I have heard from that speaker is 300W. All of mine are stock Mesa's at 200W. Two in IIC+ combo's, one in a MK IV combo and one in a 1X12 Mesa Thiele.

Boogiebabies,

This is my 1st Mesa amp so I dunno know about their possible mislabelling. Below is an image (sorry for poor quality), the label on the left reads Impedance 8 ohms, PWR CAPACITY 400 WATTS and the other reads TYPE EVM (i.e. not 12L or any other extensions) and the serial number....

I finally spoke with M/B about my combo and it seems that my '93 MK4 came from their custom shop with this EVM 400W speaker. The original owner obviously has requested this mod, probably he/she was a jazz or country player who absolutely did not want speaker distortion.

At that time the standard speaker in MK4s probably was 150W Black Shadow.

Interesting!

PS: They returned my call super quickly, great service!

Actually, that is a normal EVM 200 cont., 400 watts max.

This contrary to what others say, the label reads 400W, I am not a speaker specialist though.

Are EVM 200s labeled with "power capacity 400 watts"?

And BTW this is 12" in Mark IV.

Blowing the cobwebs off this old thread! I too have discovered the EVM speaker in my mark iv combo is 400w, not 200. Does anyone know if these are sonically different to the 200w EVMs?
