DC5 has blown output transformer, need tech advice

Post by BobbyOrr » Sat Dec 13, 2014 2:35 pm

I just bought this used DC5, played it at home for a week, no problems, took it to a gig and when I first plugged it in, there was a crackling noise and then smoke coming out the back with a bad smell. I think it's probably the output transformer, but there is no tech in my area that I can trust, so I'll need to send it somewhere. Should I send it directly to Mesa or does anyone have a good tech they can recommend?

Did it blow a fuse? It could just be power tubes and screen grid resistors.

+1!!
This is a common failure for tube amps. It is most likely a bad tube shorted and caused the grid resistors to burn up. Usually it will blow the fuse without harming the transformer (usually). If the fuse did not blow, I would check the fuse rating. For a 50 watt amp it should be (about) a 3 amp, slo-blo type fuse.
Since you did not specify your location, I don't know what tech to recommend.

Also, Mesa responds to phone calls more quickly than emails; I'd give them a call!

Good luck!

Found a good tech, it turns out that it was a shorted tube and the grid resistors burned out, but it didn't blow the fuse. Thanks for the help.

Very cool!
Now you'll have a nice amp with fresh tubes.
Enjoy! :D
