My tremoverb has never sounded as good as it did since the first tube change.
The output tubes were str420.

What do you recommend folks?

Also - how do I know what colour dot tubes my tremoverb requires?
I'm pretty sure the original str420 were yellow dot.

If I recall correctly my Tremoverb back in the day had the 6l6gc. I think the current revision of those is STR-440. You can google the color codes but my rk had gray, i got green and i couldnt really tell a difference. I also have had good experience with the Electro Harmonix 6l6GC. Just get a matched set. I got mine from Amplified Parts and Im quite happy with those guys. Tell em your amp model and they can help you dial in. A lot of people like the Winged C that were in my Marshall if you need an EL34 and I agree those sounded really good. The Mesa ones will be totally good as well but I dont remember the current model number.

PS did a quick google and found this:

Red/Yellow...earliest breakup. Equivalent to Groove Tubes rating of 4
Green/Gray...medium breakup. Equivalent to Groove Tubes rating of 5
Blue/White...latest breakup with most clean headroom. Equivalent to Groove Tubes rating of 6.
