Hello, I'm looking to take a leap and make my recordings a bit better, and I'd like to get a good preamp. Can you recommend me something, new or used, with a budget of about $800? Thanks!

RNP. Best two channel pre for the money out there, I think.

Was coming in hear to recommend exactly that. If only one channel is important to you, you can do better for 800. But the RNP is just such a great value that I think everyone should have it.

I recommended one of these Universal Audio Solo 610 to a friend & he loves it:

Here's a new Daking that looks sweet as well:

i would go for a neve 1073 - if not the original one (hard to find) the for a "cloned" version
like this one handmade from some french guys: http://www.soundskulptor.com/

the best value for money you can get :D

Another vote here for the RNP. Been using mine for a couple years now. It's a great little pre, that would be hard to beat for the cost. I plan on getting the RNC next, and racking it up with the Funklogic face plate.

This might be too old of a thread to post this, but it might be helpful for someone else who has the same question. I would look into the Universal Audio 710 Twin Finity. That might be the hippest new pre out there. It has two circuits: tube and solid state and you can blend the two together. Other then that, if you get a Lunchbox or some sort of racked power supply, there a plenty of API 500 series modules to choose from that are in the $800 price range. Of course you have the API 512, but there are others from Purple Audio, Great River, Chandler Limited, and the Juggernaut by Atlas Pro Audio (which is especially cool). Any of those would be great.
