help understanding compression

I've been reading up on compression and can recite what it is doing. However I really don't have a practical understanding on using compression. Could someone give examples of audio that could be helped with added compression, audio where compression is being abused, and/or quality examples of real life application of compression?

for highly compressed guitar (classic compressor sound) listen too e.g.

- under the bridge, red hot chilli peppers
- purple rain, prince

for some speaker killer dynamic sounds without any compression

- starkers in tokyo, whitesnake

compressor, limiter, enhancer and all this other dynamic stuff is quite a challenge. for me the best to understand when using a software with all parameter settings visible.

Abused compression = most modern rock the last 10 years.

Dynamics = '70's and before.

Thats is a great site! It explains it deeply, and carefully.
I just though I understood compression, and its complete uses.
