Yes, I know all about the infamous GT 12AX7 M (Mullard clone  )from the early 2000s and their horrible reliability. I recently bought another one of these from Sweetwater to try in my Mesa 5:25 Express Plus combo and I love the tone I get this tube in the V2 spot (which is the typical input gain stage V1 is most other amps).

Long story short - the **** GT mullard has gone fubar after four months, and I'd like to find a similar 12AX7 with a lower gain and the smoothness of this tube. I'm thinking perhaps the Mullard RI or ...fill in the blank guys.

If the GT 12AX7-M is the long plate version, then it would be the same as the Mullard RI 12AX7A. The Mullard CV4004/12AX7 is similar to the Tung Sol in structure but different in character (has a much higher gain than the long plate version). I did look up the GT-12AX7-M and the image did not look the same as the Mullard RI.
