I'm replacing all the preamp tubes on a Mark III with the idea of keeping the best old one as the cabinet-mounted spare. Any opinions as to which one is likely to be in the best shape? I know it won't be V1. Is it likely to be V5 or another one of the higher numbers?

Try them each, one by one,in the V1 slot along with the new tubes.Whichever works the quietest is the one.If they all function okay, save them all and put anyone in the spare tube mount in the cab.
