I have had 415's, but not at the same time as SED Winged C's.

Is there really a huge difference in tone and quality?

Hi,

from what i found both with C+ and MK IV configuration :

The closest 6L6 GC are the Tungsol (the normal version, no the bigbulb)
this tubes offer a great alternative to magic STR 415/ 387.

SED Winged C 6L6 are pretty medium/dark oriented; I like those when combined with appropriate Preamp tubes like RCA or Siemens.

The ones i liked the less were : TAD 6L6, STR 425 and Sovtek
The one i liked the best (appart STR 415) are : STR 420, Tungsol and also the mighty STR 430 (very nice)

hope it helps :D

I experienced a noticeable difference between the two in my C+ and IIC; not so much in my Mark IV where I prefer STR 420s/425s. I suspect the fact that the Mark II was designed with the 415s as spec has much to do with it. Same for the Mark IV which was designed when the 420s were The tube. Winged Cs are my second favorite power tube for these two amps.
