stevefulltone wrote:Hi, this is my first post. I didn't see an introductory thread, so here goes. I'm Steve, based in Spain and I gig with a Mesa F-50.

I hope it's ok to join this thread.

I need to change the power tubes in my F-50 and the only brand my local shop had was a pair of Groove Tubes 6L6S. According to the Groove Tube website this tube has a bias of -49.7 VDC. I think, but I'm not sure, that this exceeds the bias for the F-50. This is my first Boogie Amp, a before I just used Marshalls, so I was wondering if I could stick these Groove Tubes in it.

Another shop has Mesa Tubes, but it's a 2 hour drive away. Typical, huh?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Steve.

P.S what a great resource this site is.

Welcome to the board Steve! This place is a treasure trove for all things Mesa.

Any GT 6L6 rated 4-6 will work in your F-50.

Like always, Russian power tubes get my vote.

They have this "pleasant" sound to them, very clear, nice bang in the lows, go well with a high-gain preamp and are reliable as hell, especially the =C='s.

I can also recommend the new Tung-Sol 6L6CG-STR...Bold tight lows, creamy and sparkling (no ice pick) highs and really awesome mids

I run them in a deep and bias modded 50/50 (@38mA) and these tubes are the sh!t!!!

Thanks guys.

Just found some older 440s.

I will roll, as when I replaced them a few years ago they weren't really bad.

I have two Tremoverbs.

One has new Winged C 6L6s and new Mesa preamp tubes

The other has the VOS Mesa 440s and new Mesa preamp tubes.

The 440s sound amazing.

The Winged Cs are still bland and somewhat stiff, although they are coming around.

I wonder how many hours of playing is necessary to achieve the sweet spot in the Winged Cs.

I have about two hours on them now.

I don't recall having this problem with the Mesa tubes although I will be rolling the other Tremoverb soon and am waiting to see if I am going to order more Winged Cs or stick with Mesa, which has the 440s although I rolled these tubes with Mesa 430s years ago and still have them as spares.

J.J wrote:From what I tell the Ruby 6L6 in the link is the same tube as the Mesa STR440 (Chinese Shuguang origin). I am not suprised you like them, I think they are a good sounding tube and very good value (Unless you get them from Mesa  )
yeah,i only have one issue, but can't figure out if it's amp related, or tube related. after about 3 hours of constant play at gig volume, my amp starts to get pretty mushy in a way i dont like (i think due to the heat)....its hard to explain...it doesn't sound as big and boisterous, rather, less focused and ....harder to play.

not a huge issue, and not one i'd likely attribute to THOSE tubes in particular, but moreso, like i said, an amp issue.

those rubys suit me fine for my needs though. and are a tremendous value.

I'd be betting on something in the amp. Capacitors can suddenly become leaky. I had one amp that would red plate after about 40 minutes. The amp would test just fine on the bench. It took years (not that I worked on it all that hard) to figure out that one of the coupling caps would blead off the bias votage, but only when hot causing the red plates.

One thing you can do is add a cooling fan, if that works then you know you have a heat related issue.

What kind of amp is the one in question ?
Triple Crown 50 combo
Electra Dyne and Royal Atlantic heads
Express 5:25 1x12 combo
JCM800 2203
Deluxe reverb reissue
Traditional 2x12, 4x10 and 23" 1x12 cabs.

The =C= are really starting to take on a new color.

I am leaning towards them now.

I will keep listening and also in the mix is the damn unity gain thing so I have to get that straitened out and then all things being equal I can really judge the tone.

It could be a minor thing, but are the two sets of valves of the same bias rating???
