295 lost power

Post by Friedmett » Thu Sep 26, 2019 5:35 pm

I got 12 12ax7 Mesa tubes old Russian 2 produktion = EH and installed the 8 in my Quad preamp. Then 4 in my 295 poweramp.

Tested good and after a while I shut it down.

Then later I wanted to test again with a different guitar and for some strange reason volume on 10 is like 3. Everything else is the same.

Now my theory is that power tubes are giving up and they are properly due to look original '90s in the 295.

On class A which is the EL34 tubes it is the same volume problem so can I safely remove them to see if the 6L6 are doing fine on their own?

More likely the problem is a preamp tube. Even weak power tubes don't drop their power output by THAT much.

Swap around some preamp tubes and you'll soon know which ones are suspect.

Has that amp been serviced? It's old enough that it should have been recapped by now. If not, it's due..and then some.
