I had been taking piano lessons from age 6. My uncle brought me a classical guitar from South America in 1970. At age 14 in 1973 I broke my left arm above the elbow just below my shoulder. They did not want to do surgery because of my age so they put a really heavy cast on my arm from my shoulder to my wrist ( no cast in my palm). I had to sleep sitting up for 8 weeks. The positioning of the cast was perfect for guitar. My dad bought me a Mel Bay chord book and I sat there for weeks learning to chord on that old Spanish guitar (it sounds like Willie Nelson's guitar!).
