Finally getting my Holy Grail.

Gibson R9. Not a big fan of the darker bursts or extreme flames... wanted a lemon or honey burst but this ice tea turned out kind of faded with subtle flames and I like the results.

I never thought I'd own one of these. I'd been working towards an R7 when the government dropped some extra money in my lap.

That's real, real pretty. :D

I'm a huge fan of that top you've got there. Gorgeous piece of maple with visible flame pattern in a nice color, yet not some crazy over-the-top AAAAA piece of PRS Private Stock.

That is right down gorgeous Les Paul! :D

I'm probably in the minority but I prefer pickguard on cherry sunburst flame maple Gibson Les Pauls. For me makes it more like vintage-y. I guess its too "Slash-ey" without pickguard.

You have to pardon me if I'm nostalgic.

Adambomb's previous post of his purple figured quilted maple top is fine without pickguard.

But then again, don't go out and drill the bracket and holes for a pickguard if you purchase it that way.

Out of the Gibson loop for while, so that's Sunburst Ice Tea, not cherry sunburst.

Hope you don't mind me bookmarking this post. I have to gawk at it. :p

That guitar is seriously awsome and that is something you won't hear me say very often

I have an R0 that I love, but rarely take out as always seems to good to use  Anyone else feel like that ?

Is this guitar going to be a working machine ?

Yes. I can't afford to buy something this expensive and not use it. I won't use it everywhere (some places are too risky to bring it), but in general I'll use it as much as possible.

I have an R6 that I've brought most places for a number of years with no issues other than a few dings and scratches. I was intending to buy it's humbucker twin (R7), but I wound up with some extra unexpected coin and this R9 was calling my name.

That top and finish are superb. Should call it Suntea Burst. I like it better than Ice Tea Burst. Congrats on the funds to be able to get such a fine instrument. Let us know how it sounds once you jam with it!

Really nice. I'm a strat guy, but one of these days I'll pony up for one of these. I just hope it will look as good as yours. Good luck and enjoy.

Review...

This guitar sounds better than I thought it would. It pretty much nails the vintage Les Paul sound in a way I didn't know I was missing until I had this guitar. The guitar's tone is really balanced... good top and bottom end with neither mud nor harshness, but also without the bottom sounding thin or producing a dull top end. The neck and bridge pickups are really well matched in terms of tone and output. Light, airy, clarity, edgy, defined. All words I'd use to describe the way this guitar sounds.

Out of the bridge I'm getting some really cool alnico II sponge on lower strings without it feeling too soft and some ratty top end out of the high strings that adds an a bit of that "out of control" edge when soloing. The tone/volume pots work well, letting me round out the top end and bring the out of control back under control, depending upon my sonic needs at the time.

The pickups produce a slight scoop that gives the guitar a really woody response without sounding hollow. It's got rock and roll all over it.

I'm used to a Les Paul's neck pickup being boomy, but this guitar has none of that. The neck tone retains a lot of clarity and detail... I can even play with a lot of dirt and not have it mush up or loose definition.

Overall I'm extremely satisfied. I wanted a guitar that would produce tones that exceeded that of my '69 Goldtop and this guitar has exceeded it by such a huge margin that there is no doubt in my mind that I made the right decision.

The pick guards are off all my Les Pauls. It's my personal preference.

Not really sure what the plate on the pickup selector cover is made out of as I've never looked all that closely.

The guitar sounds exactly like I wished my other Les Paul sounded like.

Absolutely freekin' gorgeous.

What pickups are on these? Burstbuckers?
