I took my Mark lll blue stripe simul-class, black dot 100/60 watt and studio pre-amp simul-stereo 295 outside to compare the tone and get a decent, less compressed anyway, samples using my iPhone 5. For the clean sample I'm using a MIM strat with active EMG pick-ups, for metal the guitar is a 1987, bought it new, Jackson with a Seymour Duncan Dimebag pick-up. To me, the StudioPre/295 sounded more open on the high gains sounds, than the other two. Close to a godd Marshall, for articulation.

On the Clean sounds I thought your Blue stripe sounded better.

I would ask none question of those two amps:

Have you replaced the original caps?

I've only changed the tubes. Black dot has a matched quad of =C= 6L6's @ 21.5 ma. and the blue stripe has Mesa 420 6L6's and =C= EL34's. The blue stripe had a SPAX in V1 and I found that it sizzled with an old General Electric 12ax7 in there instead. The Black got hyper with old Amperex bugle boys in V1 and V3. The studio pre came with Sovtek 12ax7wc tubes, they must be military or something, they rule.
