Like, it's bad luck to wish someone good luck? So's ya wish them to "break a leg" so as not to jinx them?
But, where it came from?......

Bill,

The term comes from the fact that the wooden pole in thte bottom of a curtain is called a leg, so the idea is that you have had so many curtain calls that you break the leg.
