I agree with the tube thing.....I have also discovered my 5:50 is much more friendly with single coils than it is with humbuckers......a gain thing. You can tame some of that with some 12AT7's or 5751's in V1 and V2.....

Matt is right on here. If Fender 60 watt amp is 'too much' I have an idea even a 5:25 cranked would be as well. I know for a fact my 5:50 volume wise blows a Fender Bandmaster out of the water.....hey it's a Mesa high gain thing. Do some research on power versus decibels. The 5 watt setting...

I always flip the standby switch....I do not power it off to switch it from 5 to 50 or vice versa

My 'gig' is at my church....small sanctuary probably 3-4 thousand square feet and the 5 watt setting is all I need in there even when we crank it up a little. If you mike it and as I did outside once still got plenty out of 5 watts. Wander sometimes if I will ever use the other tube :lol:

I do not believe the 5:25 will operate in class A at the 25 (30) watt setting. It is definitely a class AB push pull configuration. As pointed out switching to the 5 watt setting will cause the amp to use a different OPT and operate the amp on one tube in triode.

You just can not beat the full clean tone that the 6L6 power section will give you. It is one of the best clean tones on any of the modern amps that I can afford. That is the reason I opted for the 5:50. I have not been as impressed with channel 2 (I do like the crunch setting on CH 1) but the...

I do suppose blackface clean would be a good description. It is interesting that Mesa gets that good 'big bottle' clean sound from the EL84 power tube but they do in the 5:25. And yes I believe Leo Fender and those guys defined the benchmark of guitar amplification. I thought I read somewhere...

Thank you very much for the work you put into your answer. I just happen to have 2 Mullard 12AT7 from a HiFi venture from a few years ago that still test practically new. I will follow your advice and give this a shot. Again thanks Mike
