    RetroValves - any opinions?

Saw them at NAMM in the Jet City Amps booth. They are a direct replacement for 12ax7s. No microphonics and guaranteed for life. 3 different gain levels available. Michael Soldano says they are great. Sounded fine in his amps there but the NAMM floor is no place for really listening...

    Bright preamp tubes

I too am in the Mesa and Randall families (Mark IV, RM22 and RM100). Since the RM22 runs on a pair of EL84s you are never going to get a true Recto sound out of it - espcially cranked up because the EL84s start to break up and really dominate the tone.

What is this Mark IIA worth?

Thanks for the reply Zodiac. I put this in classifieds because I hope to have it listed soon - if I decide to buy and flip it. Figured this would be a kind of pre-view. Turns out the amp is a Mark IIb. It was hard to tell from the pictures but the owners manual says its a IIb.

What is this Mark IIA worth?

Hello All: I know someone selling a Mark IIa combo built for him by Randall Smith in 1980. He played it for about 6 hours and put it in climate controlled storage. The thing is basically new. It has a 1x12 extension cab. The combo and extension are made from some kind of rare walnut wood...

    Microphonic Tube Question

Quick question about microphonic tubes: If you push and otherwise quiet tube to the point of squealing, does it damage the tube or make it more prone to be microphonic - or can you just back off and it returns to "normal".? Thanks, Ron

    Power Tube Rating Question

Hi All: I have a matched quad of JJ 6l6GCs. I put them in my Mark IV completely forgetting about the fact that they are supposed to be rated in a certain range to work properly with the amp. I gigged with it for about a month with no problems. When I remembered about the need for a correct...

Any experience with E-Bay sellers in Eastern Europe/Russia?

Hi All: I am interested in buying a RFT 12ax7 or two and while there are many available on E-Bay, most if not all sellers are in Easter Europe/Russia. The seller ratings appear to be good, but I am still a little nervous about it. Have any of you had any expereience with buying tubes from any...

    Hammond 12ax7?

Great information - thanks all! BTW- I got that tube in a batch pulled from an old Hammond organ. The whole batch for $7! Several tubes I'll never use, but a few good 12ax7's. Anyone interested in some 12au7's?

    Hammond 12ax7?

Thunda: You may be right about that. It does not sound bad, but it does not produce a tone that really catches my ear. I have to disagree about vintage tubes being over-hyped. I just got a Bugle Boy and a few Sylvania 12ax7wa's that make a mind blowing difference in what my amp sounds like...

    Hammond 12ax7?

Thanks for the info. I am lousy with a camera so I looked around at some pictures of GE 12ax7's and this is definitely a GE. Any opinions or observations on how these should sound? I tried it out and I am not really impressed with it. It is OK, but it does not really have a noticeable...

    Hammond 12ax7?

The 12 AX7 marking on it is in grey and on 2 lines the 12 over the AX7. There is a U.S.A. in the same gray print under the AX7. It also looks like there may be some dots (3 or 4?) in the same gray ink under the USA. They are covered by the Hammond logo so it is hard to see. There are 2...

    Hammond 12ax7?

Hey All: I have a few Hammond labeled long plate 12ax7's that say "Made in USA" on them. I have seen Amperex Hammonds, but no American made. Anyone know who made the Hammonds in the US? Thanks, Ron

    Transatlantic anyone?

They had the TransAtlantic at the NAMM Show. Great little amp. 2 channels and several tone and voicing switches. I am not sure they are really trying to compete with the Tiny Terror or the Vox "lunchbox". They all have that similar look, but the Boogie is at least twice as expensive ($900)...

    Sylvania tubes

Thanks for your input Mavguy. Your insight on tubes is always helpful. Do you have any of these in your collection? Ron

    Sylvania tubes

I see TONS of Baldwin labeled Sylvania tubes on E-bay. What is the deal with these? Are all Balwin tubes re-labled Sylvanias? Are they generally good tubes - I would assume most of them are pulled from old Baldwin organs? I have some old Sylvanias that I really like - would these be another...

    Mark IV Tube Question

Quick quesiton about what tubes I can use in my Mark IV. I know I can put EL34s on the outside sockets and I can run all 6V6's instead of 6L6's. But.... Can I run 2 6V6's and 2 6L6's? Thanks, Ron
