    red hot el84s DC3

Bias mod works fine - I took my dual cal from -10.8 to -14, doesn't eat valves now and sounds just as good as before. It's a 5 minute job to solder a piggy back resistor. No need for a pot.

Extension Cabs for Express 5:50 PLUS

    Sounds better with 1 Vintage 30 and 1 GT12 75 :)

    resurrecting a DC3 (a.k.a. C.S.I. Dc3)

By standard I mean factory setting. The -11 is way too hot for modern valves - better around -14v. Look for a post called DC-3 issue on May 23 2013, Bendo's advice on the piggy back resistor mod is recommended unless you want to keep replacing valves regularly. Even cold JJ's don't live long and...

    resurrecting a DC3 (a.k.a. C.S.I. Dc3)

Bias at -11v with a plate voltage of 400v is standard. Look for posts on bias mod.

5:50+ - wildly different volumes in each voice?

I too thought gain increased volume, but it doesn't have a major effect. It sounds louder because with distortion it widens the bandwidth output but doesn't necessarily increase the db. Human ears perceive the wider bandwith as louder :)

    need info for DC-2

Weight 44 like quoted. They are hot but easy to reduce bias voltage . Only needs one resistor piggy backing on another. Details are in mods post in this forum. Doesn't ruin tone either, BTW they are loud :)

Who has a cab clone and likes it?

I've just bought one. The only problem I have with it is the low output volume on the headphone socket. May well be the impedance of the phones I'm using but none of the ones I have work well unless I crank the masters on the amp higher than what I'd normally use gigging. Steve

    What cabs...

Yup - if you don't have a reliable sound guy out in front it's virtually impossible to judge your mix stood in front of your cab. One easy way you can do it yourself is get a looper in the mix. Run a sample in there, put your guitar down and go and stand out front. Then go back and up your mids...

    5:50 Express + - Cab or Combo?

2x12 cab with a Vintage 30 and a G12T75 with my 5:50+ head is my favourite, I've also a 1x12 cab with a Vintage 30. Both cabs are closed back almost. The 1x12 has a single 5 inch port on the back - the 2x12 has two ports. Used the 2x12 with the 5:50+ at a jam session the other week. One of my...

Express plus 5:50 or Mark V:25?

Depends how much clean headroom there is on the 25? Tons of it on a 5:50 plus on 50watts which was my main reason for buying one. Steve

    DC5 Reverb low?

My DC2 is same now - plenty reverb. Dunno bout DC5 but certainly on 2's and 3's V5 tube's gain has a big effect on reverb level and may be a simple fix. However one thing to watch for is the ground connection on the tank itself. My tank was quite corroded superficially. Only one connector had...

    DC-2 problem

Success!! It lives! Both Zeners in the low voltage supply were broken, in different ways! One would allow any voltage through, the other was open circuit. One 1N4007 was way off and allowing some voltage back. I've changed all 7 of them in the power supply. One of the 220uF caps was way off too...

    Mark IV buying advice

90's caps are, generally speaking, OK. 60's not so if they have been left standing for some time. From experience - Bought two as new identical Marshall JTM's that hadn't been touched in 40 years. When I went to collect the guy had one plugged in ready to demonstrate. Before I could say anything...

    DC-2 problem

Thanks to Orion_99 for the pointer - there is something weird going on in the low voltage section. Should be -15V to pins 3 & 5 of the 5532 - there isn't - It's 0. Between the zeners it's 0 too. Hope it's just a shorted zener, but I've a nasty feeling that the 220uF 35V cap may be shot. That...

    DC-2 problem

Getting somewhere - Open jack inserted into input and guitar plugged into fx return - nice clean sound. Looks like that may exclude power section and V3b - I think :) No MPSA's arrived yet though :(

    DC-2 problem

Pulled the 5532 - no difference. Jumpering fx - no difference. I'll try a pedal into fx return tomorrow, haven't got another amp here with fx on it at the moment. The MPSA's didn't come today but will replace them as soon as they turn up. Steve

    DC-2 problem

Thanks for the reply. I replaced the 5532 - no difference. I'll try pulling it altogether and see what happens. Jumpered send and return but no go there either. Also tested resistance on contacts with no plugs in and send was 16 ohm - cleaned them and all now less than 1 but still nothing...

    DC-2 problem

Hi Guys - first post here, hoping someone can help. I picked up a faulty Studio Caliber DC-2 cheap. Full of dog hairs and spider webs and been left for some time by the looks of it. It had been turned on by previous owner otherwise I'd have run it up on a variac to help the caps. Symptoms are...
