'Sweetest' speakers for the big V? Blues/Classic, not metal.

Huge speaker question for you V gurus... I've been renting MK V amps for awhile for sessions and I think I'm in love. The only thing is, I'm not 100% v30s are going to work for me. I'm looking for deep, glassy cleans on Channel 1 (think Lonestar, Silverface Fenders etc), great bluesy rhythm and ligh...

More about the magic LSS/Celestion Gold combo

I've heard many times about the compatibility of the LSS and Celestion Gold speakers, but I've never had the chance to plug in and try one out. A few questions for those of you who have... (1.) How would you describe/compare the sound, specifically against the stock Black Shadow (which I actually li...

Best speakers for non-metal Mark V tones?

I'm thinking of getting a Mark V. The tones I'm into are decidedly old-school - Twins, Ac30s, Matchless, Bluesbreakers etc... In other words, the opposite of Dream Theater's super heavy vs. ultra clean vibe. I rented the amp for a week and found I could get almost anything out of it... incredible! S...

Channel 2 Mk I mode... dark and weird?

I had my first day with the Mk V yesterday and was generally blown away. I am not really a high gain player and was surprised to get tons of vintage-approved medium gain sounds from the amp that simply kicked ass. The only one that left me scratching my head was the Mk I mode on channel 2. I had to ...

Re: LSS and hard (EVH) rock: Did I buy the wrong amp?

Great advice and good to see it worked! This amp is so much more versatile than it would seem. A lot of guys would scoff at me saying I can get a great, toothy Marshall type sound from the LSS, but I do it every day. Like this: Drive, Gain and Treble all a little past half (1:00-2:00), Mids and Bass...

Re: LSS Second Channel

That was probably me. I read something in the manual about the Mid control affecting the 'feel' of the amp more than the actual midrange content, so I tried it. AWESOME. It brought out the best in the speaker, worked with all my guitars & pedals, and just in general made a great amp better. I keep m...

Re: What LSS channel do you use dirt pedals on?

In my experience, a really great 'no compromise' clean sound with some sparkle on top is not the best platform for overdrive pedals. And terrible for fuzz! The only drive pedals I really love on a proper clean amp are the ones with a 'clean blend' like the Voodoo Lab Sparkle Drive and the T-Rex Møll...

Ha! Pics when it's all wired up and looking nice. Right now it's black spaghetti central. After seeing that that orange tolex pig, there are standards to uphold.

Re: ft switchable drive?

I've now got all 4 switchable functions (Channel, Reverb, Solo and newly switchable Drive) hooked up to a MIDI controller. You can use an RJM Amp Gizmo for this or whatever - I'm using a Sound Sculpture Switchblade - and control your amp along with any other gear in your rig. I either have them all ...

Re: Mic ideas and techniques for LSS tone?

I've had great luck with the Dragonfly by Blue Microphones. It's a good all-purpose mic (acoustic, vocals etc), and it has a swiveling head, so it's very easy to set it up in front of the amp and record it at several angles wthout actually repositioning the mic, listen back and identify the 'sweet s...

Zendrive 2 my friend. I got stuck in the shed with that combo for hours today!

Nice and touch-sensitive, big and warm sound (esp. for single notes - wow) and not one iota of the LSS vibe is compromised. I bet you'll love it.

Re: Overdrive

There are only 2 or 3 types of overdrive not covered by the Mark V: A 'Clean Blend' overdrive, where you can blend in your clean like a 2-amp setup (Think Voodoo Lab Sparkle Drive, T-Rex Møller or TC Nova Drive), an old school Page/Hendrix/Gilmour fuzz tone (Tonebender, Fuzzface or Big Muff style), ...

Re: Four (4) Lonestar series Geek-out Questions

Killer responses here! I'm still thinking about changing my Drive tube to something dark if there's a chance it might work. Whenever I engage the Drive section I have to turn my guitar's tone control down to about half.

Re: LSS 1 yr. Tonal heaven not obtained

On the 335, there don't seem to be any 'bad' settings with the LSS, and I use both pickups all the time. The only thing I'd say about a two-humbuckers guitar with more distorted lead sounds, is that the middle position (both pickups engaged) needs a little tweaking to sound really killer. On my 335,...
