Re: odd mark iv question - problem with new (used) amp

The fan on mine is really quiet, the buzzing was probably something else i.e the reason the fuse blew !!

Neither they're out of production.
It's only the Widebody combo and Medium head that have the blue led.

Re: The "New" Mesa preamp tubes

I have Russian 1's and Russian 2's in my Boogies, they look exactly the same except a couple of the Russian 2's have different getters to the 1's and even the other 2's ????? I saw somewhere that they may be Tesla reissues. You can tell if they're JJ's or not very easily, the internals are completel...

They're mid M/B spec so will be fine. Just make sure you put the pairs in the correct sockets !

All of them !!! There is no real sonic difference, just different operating parameters. I've compared Yellows to Greys and there's nothing I could notice. Maybe if you compared Reds to Whites i.e the extremes, there may be a tiny difference ??? Don't forget all the Boogie colours correspond to the m...

Do you change your strings regularly ?? I have found with my PRS's at high volume and gain the pups can cause boomy feedback and they actually vibrate !!

There used to be quality issues with some EL34's many (15?) years ago, a lot of the Boogie user manuals still say this (why ?) and don't recommend them for reliability reasons. Nowadays they are easily as reliable/robust as 6L6's. I have STR447's in my MKIV outer sockets and am well pleased with them.

The Stiletto cab is very similar sounding to the Marshall you have, it's probably just a bit more articulate. The Recto cab would sound 'bigger' with more bass and high end. The main thing I've noticed though is the build quality, Mesa cabs weigh a ton and are built like a tank, the Marshalls have p...

It's usually safe to use a cab of higher impedance, but not lower, so a 16ohm cab would be fine in the 8 ohm socket.

The M/B 'Russian 2' is a gain/noise tested EH 12AX7. I understand new Boogies now ship with Chinese 12ax7's, any opinions on them anyone ?

Just replace the inner pair, they don't have to be a matched quad. The rectifier tubes can be replaced singly. :D

If you have EL34's in the outer sockets and run it in class A (i.e a 50 watt EL34 power stage) it sounds great for rhythm but I still prefer Simul Class for leads.
