I think it has something to do with the speaker. I tried my 5:50 with an Eminence Red Coat Tonker in it with my band last week and it was much louder and brighter than with the stock C90 (a lot heavier too!). I used it this week with the stock speaker in it and found that I had to turn the masters u...

Re: MXR Carbon Copy

There is a "Regen" knob that is suppose to enable you to adjust the number of repeats from zero to infinity. Well, I didn't really hear any difference untill it was all the way cranked up at which point it would repeat endlessly. If anyone else has one of these I sure would appreciate you views as ...

I love mine. I consider the clean channel to have an idealized Twin Reverb tone. It is, by far, the best surf amp that I've owned (though the Lone Star Special that I played along side it had an even better clean sound). I prefer the dirty modes more than an OD or distortion pedal. BTW, I am not a s...

My 5:50 hisses on the clean mode of channel 1. It's a little louder than my other amps but is not noticeable at all with a band.

The hiss goes away in the crunch mode of channel 1.

Mesa's warranty specifies that it has to be filled out and sent in within a certain amount of time, but I don't think that's leagally binding.

I switch it to standby. Not only because I don't like the pop sound, but that's the way the guy who showed it to me at the dealer did it.

the gibson one does look better and they did drop the price quiet a bit. I hadn't realized it wasn't 600 bucks anymore. I paid $299 for the GA-5. I would never have considered paying more for it. Even then, it's a little expensive for a 5 watt amp. The Epi Valve Jr is a great amp great for the pric...

Don should have just saved your money and bought a VJ and modded it. I wasn't interested in the VJ. The turret board, good transformers, speaker, even the fact that the GA-5 is made in USA, really appealed to me. I don't even like the styling of the Epiphone and think the Gibson looks good. It's re...

I use the loop with my H&K Rotosphere. It sounds fine with the pedal on or off.

I've got a Gibson GA-5 coming today.

For a little more than twice the price of the Epi, it's made in USA, has decent transformers, turret board construction and good quality caps and resistors.

It should be real easy to mod. I think it'll even take a 10" speaker.

I recommend an NOS 5Y3. I use one in a tweed Deluxe (5E3) clone.
They're still cheap and more reliable than a new one.
I've also used a 5R4 in the amp with similar results.

I wondered about that too.
When my Express 5:50 is in 5 watt mode both of my power tubes glow blue.
They're both getting high voltage and are both active.

I believe my 5E3 clone is a little louder than my Princeton Reverb though the PR has a lot more clean headroom. I don't generally use my PR and Vibrolux Reverb for dirty sounds so I don't get to really hear how loud they can get. The PR is fun. It's like a lunchbox full of good sounds including reve...

I have a 5E3 clone and a '68 Princeton Reverb (same circuit and speaker as a blackface). I don't have an AC15 so I can't compare them directly, though I don't think either of the Fenders are as loud as the Vox. I believe that a Princeton Reverb would be more different sounding than an AC15 than a 5E...
