Re: DC Mods that are easy to do!

Looking for DC3 bias mod and suggested bias current. Quick fix -Piggyback a 470K on the 120k in the bias circuit. This will bring the bias voltage down to a more tube friendly -14vdc instead of the insane -11 with 400vdc on the plates. Adjustable? Replace the 120K in the bias supply with a 100k pot...

Re: studio 22 strange tone

More times than not,I find this problem,"ice pick like tone" to be associated and cured with a bias adjustment. This requires modifying the bias circuit to be adjustable. Its a very easy and inexpensive mod,I've done it many times for free when doing other work, such as a cap job.Its just a $1.50 part...

Re: MM Transformer Upgrades: Power? Output? Both?

Hmmm...the Fender OT's are about 1/2 the weight of the Hammond 1650K I put on my Palomino V32. The hammond 1650NA is 8 lbs. Wonder what the difference is...Bob

Re: EL84 Bias Values, crackling, etc....

Came across this while searching for something. EL84 operates at 12W. What you really need to watch for is the plate dissipation. If the voltage here is the plate voltage (taken between pin7 and 3) and I is the cathode current, assuming a typical 4mA screen current ,plate dissipation for the mesa v...

Re: Higher on the "master output" lower on the "preamp"...

I havent noticed much difference(in tone) if I lower the master of lower the channel volumes or vice versa. Did experiment with this idea though.Bob

Re: How to increase bass on DC 3

I use a deep V in the EQ setting for this with the second slider from the left down a bit too. With fresh tubes and just 2 1x12's I get some pretty aggressive bass. Its the punchiest, loudest EL84 amp Ive heard. If i closed my eyes or didnt know better Id figure it had big bottles. Anyhow-This is imp...

Re: does this make any sense?

Yeah I cranked the master and channel volumes on my DC-3. Slowly raised the gain. The results was surprizing. Big ,open crunchy. I'll have to experiment more when nobodys around-its loud. Bob
