Re: Ageing a Dual Rectifier Solo Head

Usually you would call that "dating" the amp. When I clicked on this I thought I was going to give suggestions on how to make the amp look older. Anyway, if you look at the PCB in the amp, it should tell you what revision it is, which can help with figuring out how old it is. To do that you would ne...

Re: Maverick Restoration Progress: DONE

Nice job. It's definitely a unique specimen with the black tolex and the Mesa/Boogie badge (as opposed to the blond tolex and the Mesa Engineering badge). I opted for an amber jewel on mine to make it even blonder :) I've also got a blue Jewel as well. I have seen other Mavericks with black Taurus ...

Re: Is boosting a Recto overrated?

Never boost. Use the love 'em or hate 'em 490r/498t pups. I will add reverb and or delay to my cleans and I like to mix in chorus and a phaser at times, but no boost. I use the solo switch if I need a volume boost. And, the 490R and 498T ARE Alnico pickups, and honestly not that hot. Even with a se...

Re: Maverick Restoration Progress: DONE

AND DONE! The grill really does fit snugly. I had to take it back off to get the chassis in, but now it's SOLID. I also changed to a purple power jewel. I think it looks pretty good. Also SOUNDS pretty good. I've kept the JJ tubes in it for now, but soon I can see myself putting some old production ...

Re: Is boosting a Recto overrated?

IMHO, boosting a high gain amplifier is kinda redundant. Originally you boosted your Non Master Volume Marshall to get the input stage cooking, which then went down the line and put everything into overdrive right into the power tubes. With modern amp designs, it really isn't necessary. You may gain...

Re: DC-5 All Dressed up - Ready to Rock

Ok, I misunderstood V2 "howling". Was thinking it was noisy, not wailing. 8) Tube rolling can become a endless project... Oh yes, definitely wailing. More crunchy goodness. V3 had originally been an RCA 12AT7 as well, so that may have mellowed the amp as well. Thankfully I still have the remains of...

Re: DC-5 All Dressed up - Ready to Rock

I haven't really noticed any increase in noise, either background or microphonic. I haven't blasted it yet though. V2 was originally a sovtek 12AX7WB, so pretty much anything would be an improvement. I just got in some used old stock tubes, so I'm considering putting one of those in the phase invert...

Re: Maverick Restoration Progress: Almost Done

This is the leftovers after I pulled off all of the torn aluminum. http://tbonesullivan.com/images/amps/maverick21.jpg And now time for the new sheeting. http://tbonesullivan.com/images/amps/maverick22.jpg Installed, and stapled down using my trusty Arrow t-50 and 1/4 staples. The wood of the cabine...

Maverick Restoration Progress: DONE

Well, thanks to Trent at Mesa Boogie, I was easily able to get the parts needed to get my Maverick 2x12 back to being the way it should be. I got new sticky foil for the top, new foam rubber, and some other bits and bobs that were needed. The Grill, as far as I can tell, is not the original grill fo...

DC-5 All Dressed up - Ready to Rock

Well, after years of avoiding it, I finally emailed Mesa Boogie (Thanks Trent!!) and got a replacement tube guard for the DC-5. I had it out a few times, and nearly had a power tube get killed. Seeing as SED tubes aren't growing on trees anymore, I want to keep them intact. I also changed the tubes ...

THAT is an awesome sound. Now if only I could remember which Van Halen song you are playing at the beginning.

I would also say leave it as is, or sell it as is, and get something more travel friendly. Even as just a head that thing is a beast. The head weighs more than a lot of combos.

Re: Doug's tubes worst service ever. Buyer beware

I've used Doug's tubes for years, and the only problem I ever had was a missing tube, which was fixed immediately. No DOA tubes, nothing. I just got an order in Saturday for some ANOS preamp tubes new production tubes. I will say, as a 10+ year veteran of customer service/loss prevention, that for s...

Re: Maverick Tube Chart

That is kind of interesting. Haven't seen many amps where V1 is not the input driver for all the channels. Also the clean channel has more triodes dedicated to it than the lead channel? Guess I'll need two quiet tubes for the Maverick once I get it put back together.
