Re: Rebuild Cost for MK III at Mesa Boogie headquaters

I was playing my III+ yesterday and it sounded so incredibly rich. I was fiddling a bit with the settings, and I don't think I realized this before, but I have the presence set very high on it, something like 8 or 9 (it's in the back so I can't see it). This is a really big difference from when it ...

Re: Rebuild Cost for MK III at Mesa Boogie headquaters

My Mark III refresh last year cost somewhere in the mid 300 range including a new quad of power tubes and one new pre tube, shipped. 100% worth it. I sent mine to Mike for a refresh + mods about 15 years ago and that was the price range. Being an old amp, I wanted a true expert to give it a full ev...

Re: Stryper tone

Oh the Mark III isn't going anywhere, was just looking to get input on which of the newer amps might cover more ground tonally, Mark IV, Mark V, or JP2C...the MIDI on the JP2C would be a thing of beauty for a complex rig. I think the JP2C or of course the elusive IIC+ would be more in the III ballp...

Re: Mk iii stripes

I have a no stripe which became a "+" after Mike B did the R1 (clean up/lower gain), R2 (clean up bass, add volume knob to back panel) and Reverb (deepen reverb). It has the searing, lustworthy IIC+ lead sound, which is what counts! Mine was a bit tired when I bought it, so I sent it to Mike to fres...

Re: Mark V owner review of JP-2C (multi page post)

Cool. I have a Roland TD-25KV and love it. Shades of guitar playing, I initially went though a period of trying many different drumsticks to figure out what I like, and have a few favorites now. Started out with signature sticks of players I admire, since they are already specialized. I definitely l...

You are a very lucky man!

It sounds gnarly when tapping on the lower strings especially. 8)

Re: Mark V owner review of JP-2C (multi page post)

I mix it up. Classic Rock to heavy metal. I may spend more time on a Pink Floyd type sound but I prefer a more heavy approach, my roots came from the Scorpions, Judas Priest, and Deep Purple when I was younger. Now it is Led Zep and or ACDC as that tends to be the focus when I get involved with oth...

Re: Mark V owner review of JP-2C (multi page post)

Wow, this is a very wordy but interesting thread! I haven't read every post, but enough to know there are some serious tone chasers here... I have a MkIII head with R1+R2+ Reverb mods by Mike B, and a stock MkIV combo. I sleep like a baby at night knowing that I have what I consider the ulti...

Re: I picked up a Mark iii Red Stripe this weekend (My 1st M

You ain't kidding! This amp is organic and I ALREADY can't get the smile off of my face. I own 2 Tremoverb 2x12 Combos a 94 and a 98 and I own a 98 Dual Rec Solo head that I run through an Avatar Cab with V30 Hellatones. And I THOUGHT I knew what I wanted UNTIL I got this little power house. My fav...

Re: Cabinet Pairing with JP-2C

I've never heard any cabinet that sounds better than a Mesa Mark series metal grill half open/half closed with C90s up top and mighty EVM12Ls below. I used to have a 1960A for my Marshall, but the Mark series slayed it so badly, I sold it and got another Mark! Whichever of my Capital Amps (Think Cap...

Re: My Mark III blue stripe vs. my JP-2C, high gain.

Nice comp. As a rabid MkIII devotee, to my ears your recording has more bass than needed. You could get a more Slayerish tone with bass at 0 and slightly less on the bottom graphic 2 sliders. And of course cranking the amp more! I have two Hannemans (with SPC midboost knob) and can nail Slayer all d...

Re: Looking for pickup recommendations

To the OP: First, don't agonize too much about pickups. I've seen people online who change dozens of times, which is silly AFAIK. At that point, they are like dogs walking around in circles on rugs before they lay down. They are simply compelled to keep doing it. They tend to be distracted from any ...

Re: Mark III - Keep the bass down or lose your mind like I d

I keep the bass knob at 0 to 2, depending on the guitar, and have a stout shallow V shape for the graphic, with the center slider being neutral to preserve more mids. I guess I should call it U shape. Another absolutely critical item for the MkIII is the treble knob. Sounds great for high gain when ...

Re: Looking to buy a superstrat - advice need

The Charvel Superstrat neck is simply legendary. I have four of them, 3 MIJ and 1 USA model. All incredible instruments and a much better value as players than high end Jacksons.

Re: How many guitars are a "collection"

I think 5 easily clears that hurdle. Bonus points if you have 5 guitars with no duplication. I've never understood exact duplication unless perhaps you are a well known touring artist and you have a certain signature look that you like to maintain...
