Re: 6V6 tubes

Good luck with that.... Not sure if you need to use EL34 bias for the 6V6 tube as you do with the TC-50 or TC-100. For some reason, I see red-plating in your future. Hopefully I am wrong on that. This. 6V6s are typically biased around 20mA give or take. Neither 6L6's or EL34s would be biased that c...

Re: Tight High Gain Recto Mods

I updated the page regarding the voicing circuit, gain, and load resistor. Thanks for sharing. Your site is one of the inspirations for me learning about tube amps. Thanks, I appreciate that. FYI, I found that I made a couple of mistakes with the math for the "Design Concepts' articles. T...

Re: Mesa Rectifier: ultimate 2ch vs 3ch comparison

Thanks for the a/b. The differences are subtle, but there. In a blind test I sure as sh!t wouldn't be able to say which one was which though lol. To my ears, the 3CH had a touch more top, and the 2CH had punchier low-mids. But realistically, there differences were <5% or so. Personally, ever since I...

Re: Plugged speaker cab into slave out - how screwed am I?

You cooked your output tranny, some/all output tubes, screen resistors... Sorry dude, but that's an expensive repair, mostly because the OPT will run a couple hundred alone.

Re: New Mesa Amp: Fillmore 50!!!

Just watched the demos. Sounds great, a lot more gain than I'd expect a vintage-y amp to have. But it's Mesa, of course it will have plenty of dirt. It really fills out the lineup. I'm a high gainer myself, so while I'm not particularly interested in the Fillmore, I love the straight forwa...

Re: Transition revision G, and possible problems

Hey, nice score! I'm jealous.

If I'm not mistaken, older Rectifiers have a serial FX loop, so the Send pot acting as a master is by design.

Your channel switching issue is likely a job for a tech. Hopefully you get it sorted out. Good luck mate. 8)

Re: Tight High Gain Recto Mods

I have a 2005 3ch Triple Rectifier and I'm doing some tone tests. I need to use the FX loop on (I've modded it to have a serial loop, I have a lot of modulation pedals and I really like the SOLO function), and I'm experimenting what's the best tone according to my ears. First, I used a very low mas...

Re: Strudio Preamp Lead Sound "fuzzy" ???

I just got a Studio Preamp, with a set of almost new Mesa tubes (used 1 month). I was really surprised that the lead channel is really "fizzy". The high end is reminiscent of fuzz box (still with some tube elegance...). I tried very possible knobs settings, tube swapping, Effects Send output... Onl...

Re: Which preamp tube to play with

V1a (first half of the triode) is the input stage for all channels on a Recto. So anything that happens at that stage will be amplified the most, and generally the reason why it's said to have the most influence on tone. Preamp tubes are cheap, see for yourself.

Re: Odd popping and sounds through triple rectifier

It sounds like a bad power tube(s). You can diagnose it by pulling one tube at a time with the amp on (you won't hurt anything running the amp unbalanced briefly) to see if the noises go away. The cathode follower issue is known as cathode stripping. According to people much smarter than me it occur...

Re: Two issues with my Mesa Boogie Mini Rectifier

Did you change the power tubes as well, or just preamp and/or phase inverter? Hissing/crackling is a sign of PT's on their way out, even if they sound "ok".

Re: Tight High Gain Recto Mods

It's been a while since I've been around here. Had some real life stuff going that pulled me away from fun stuff, like modding amps. 8) . Anyway, I figured I should report back having put my amp through it's paces with my band. Welp, I have to be honest. I've reversed a few of my mods. Fact is, Mesa...
