Re: Add a Lead Master to your Studio 22? Yes or No?

I found my 22+ to be a lot more usable than my 22 because of the Lead Master. A preset volume for the lead mode doesn't really work. The GEQ on the 22 helped, but I still found the lead mode on the 22 to be way too loud at home and a little too quiet with a band.

Re: Swapping preamp tubes on F-50 for lower gain

If the F-50 is like the F-30, then V2A (pins 1, 2 & 3) is the first gain stage for the lead channel. V1A follows the tonestack on the lead channel. You could install a JJ ECC832 in V2 or both V2 and V1 to lower the lead channel's gain without affecting the rhythm channel. The ECC832 is like an ECC83...

Re: Overdrive for a TA-15

I like the H1 setting so much that I've never really experimented with ODs with mine. If I did, I'd probably use the Prince of Tone. I love that pedal with everything else.

Re: TA 15 Metal Cover Tarnish

This seemed to happen worse on earlier amps. I remember there being a lot of discussion about it early on. Mine is fine. There's another very recent thread on this. https://forum.grailtone.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=85077&p=523491&hilit=ta15#p523491 Authorized Boogie said it might be related to someone...

According to the schematic, the reverb is opamp driven.

Re: Favorite Overdrive/Distortion pedal

I'm kind of amazed (but, then, in a way, not really) that both Don and Stephen share my feelings about the Rat, considering the slew of boutique/expensive pedals out there. I've always liked Rats and have had several, but last fall I bought a mid '80s blackface Rat that blew me away. I bought it, a...

Re: Purchasing Full Set of Tubes for Mark V

I put a Preamp Tone Kit from Doug's in my Express, MK IIB and Soldano Astroverb with great results, especially in the Express. It's not the cheapest way to buy tubes, but the combination of the dimpled square getter Chinese tube and Tung Sol in the early gain stages and the Sovtek 12AX7LPS in the ph...

Re: Fillmore 25 Combo - Now What???

I found the C90 to be a warm sounding speaker in an Express 5:50. I loved it for the clean sounds but not as much for the dirty sounds. I swapped it with an Eminence Tonker and it improved the detail in the dirty sounds though I didn't like it as much for clean sounds.

Man! I was tempted by that one! Only 1-1/2 hours away from me. I've been selling things, not buying, though.

Re: Mark llB - difference between early and late models

I'd like to see your schematic to compare to my MK IIB from about 1981. It has RP 8C on the board. This amp has a slightly overdriven clean channel. Kind of like a "Dumble" type of sound. Dirty without being gritty. Smooth. It doesn't have a lot of drive in the lead channel unless everything is cran...

Re: NOS 12AX7 tubes for Cathode follower ?

Any NOS 12AX7 should work fine. The issue with the modern Russian 12AX7s that can't handle being used in a cathode follower position is that they don't meet the spec for heater-cathode voltage for a 12AX7.

Re: Modded my DC-5 - more like Mark/previous Caliber

Interesting. I had a DC-3 and Studio .22+ at the same time and chose to keep only the 22 because I didn't care for the DC-3's lead sound. The DC-3 had a better clean sound and made less noise, but the lead sound was too strident, for lack of a better word.
