Re: NOS 12AX7 tubes for Cathode follower ?

Any NOS 12AX7 should work fine. The issue with the modern Russian 12AX7s that can't handle being used in a cathode follower position is that they don't meet the spec for heater-cathode voltage for a 12AX7.

Re: Modded my DC-5 - more like Mark/previous Caliber

Interesting. I had a DC-3 and Studio .22+ at the same time and chose to keep only the 22 because I didn't care for the DC-3's lead sound. The DC-3 had a better clean sound and made less noise, but the lead sound was too strident, for lack of a better word.

Re: load attenuator upgrade?

I'm using a THD Hot Plate with a Budda Twinmaster. This amp is only 18 watts but has no master, has a low gain preamp and gets al of it's overdrive sound from being cranked up loud! I can attenuate up to 8db before the sound is affected too much for me. At that point, it's still pretty loud. I'd lik...

Re: 90 watt Head is 10 watt issue all channels

I agree with BF- look at the phase inverter tube. I had a problem where my Express 5:50 would cut out if I switched it to 5 watt single-ended mode. If I understand it correctly, being used as a driver in a single-ended amp is more demanding the being used as a phase inverter in a push/pull amp. If 1...

Re: Mark V 90w Midboost

I did this to a Princeton Reverb. In Fender amp with no mids pot you replace the 6.8k resistor on the bass pot with a 100k (or higher) pot. In amps with a 10k or 25k mids pot, just replace it with a 100k pot. From 0-10k it's a regular Fender mids pot. Above 10k it begins to remove the tone stack fr...

Re: Modding DC3 clean channel for a more Fenderish tone

Changing the V30s to a Jensen type of speaker (or a Celestion alnico) should help. I think that's what I didn't like about my DC-3.

Re: White noise.

I'd look at lead dress. Are any wires not laying in the same path where they were before the cap job?

Re: Changing Speaker, are connections are soldered?Need help please

The wires are soldered right to the tabs on the speaker. If you don't mind spending a few bucks extra, you can buy a harness with tabs and a jack already on it.

Re: No volume on 5 watt mode

Keep in mind that you need a good strong tube there when you're in 5 watt mode. Try more than one.

Re: No volume on 5 watt mode

Did you swap the phase inverter/driver tube (V5?)? When mine went in an Express 5:50, the amp worked fine in the 50 watt setting, and very badly in the 5 watt setting.

Also, make sure that the tube you're swapping in is good- just because it's new doesn't mean it's good.

I see these for about $450 if you shop around a bit or are willing to wait.

Re: TA-15 vs 5:25+ Question

I haven't played an Express 5:25+ but I have a non + 5:25 and a TA-15 and they are very different amps. They're voiced completely differently. The TA-15 is a lot more dynamic and has great edge of break up sounds, though it has little headroom and is heaven with a Tele, it can be driven a little too...
