Re: Considering a Fender Vibro-King

I'm servicing a '68 Fender blackline Super Reverb. It has the blackface circuit. Redoing the filter caps, cathode bypass caps, power tube socket resistors, retubing with VOS tubes, and reconing a couple speakers that had rubs. Waiting on most of the parts to arrive. Even with the original 40 year ol...

Re: need advice Mark IIb

Crane's post is right on regarding preamp tubes. Mix to personal taste.

Regarding being used to biasing your Fender, exactly. Bias mod kits are available online for your amp. The mod is doable as well as reversible.

Re: Need help about tubes, STR387

They are expensive in US too. That is why I went the 6bg6ga route with adapters via eBay USA and bought quite a few until I had decent main and spare pair matches in gray and black plate (yes!) 6bg6ga Sylvanias. That might not work for you in your location. There is an online dealer that sells the S...

Re: Need help about tubes, STR387

Thanks for the correction and clarification, and please accept my apology. For a person with your knowledge my words probably sounded rude at times. Yes, I have tried 7581a Sylvania and they can possibly draw more at idle, but that depends on who is making the 7581a. The Sylvania build is capable, b...

Re: Need help about tubes, STR387

You could use them, but it would be risky, the risk compared to the cost of installing the bias mod that could easily be set to either Mesa or other values is unacceptable. It's out of warranty, but that doesn't mean one should take chances just to save some pennies, you have a very nice amp. Mesa s...

Re: Why Dumble?

There are folks who can do that. Bassman/ODS is a no brainer to the right builder, See the Marsh Overlord. I have one in 50w and it's great. The SSS circit is very complicated and has several feedback loops as well as the entire inductor thang, It's reverb circuit is also more complicated than most,...

Re: Need help about tubes, STR387

Warning! This is not the answer that the OP was originally looking for... The amp is out of warranty. Bias mod kits are easily available to easily install by a quality tech. The mod is easily reversible so if vintage collectible resale value is important, well, it just doesn't need to be until selli...

Re: Mesa's SPAX7A preamp tube

I'm still learning my caps...I'm thinking like the 6ps-716p series, in orange drop, they are the ones used in D- style builds with their smooth OD tones.

Re: Mesa's SPAX7A preamp tube

Aww, gosh, I stocked up on .01's, .15's, .22's in PIO's already, but thanks! I bet the PETP's are closer to the polypropylene stuff like the 716p's in orange drop, but a bit smoother?

Re: Mesa's SPAX7A preamp tube

In what way did these k73's earn your preference? I looked 'em up, still pretty affordable, and lots of different ratings with that poly material.

Re: Mesa's SPAX7A preamp tube

No 'lytics. Just tone caps, K40Y-9 and k42-Y, using 400v and 630v ratings. Several vendors on ebay have 'em. Their version of "Sprague Vitamin Q." Superb sounding, affordable, made a big difference from the stockers. Much more musical. Commie caps great bang for the buck...easy to find, los of 'em. ...

Re: Mesa's SPAX7A preamp tube

 HIJACK ALERT  Stokes! Funny you should write to me about vintage re-do's. I have purchased three Dumble clones, my 2/12 Mav gets little use now, nice as it is, it's for sale at a not cheap price, but the thing that has changed the most is my learning more amp theory and having fabulou...

Re: Why Dumble?

Dumble did a variety of amps. Some of his earlier ones were Bass amps, with some Ampeg SVT influence in the PI section, but mainly the Bassman circuit was the daddy for his conversions, as well as the 80's ODS series, the Bassman iron was about the beefiest 2x6l6 iron Fender used.
